This is from Gavin Nichols, Talk About It! Program Officer-Community Initiatives with the San Antonio Area Foundation, writing about the difference that pet transport is making not only here in San Antonio but across the nation.
This is a Tail of Two Transports: dogs rescued from San Antonio?s Animal Care Services and transported to different parts of the country where the number of adopters is actually greater than the number of local shelter dogs available for adoption.
Virginia Davidson is the Executive Director and transport driver of Alamo Rescue Friends, usually assisted by her husband, Greg. With her counterparts in San Antonio, Rita Braeutigam and Marcy Lynch?the ACS Lifesavers, providing foster care for 3 ? 4 weeks prior to transport; ARF makes several trips per year from San Antonio to shelters in New England with around 30 dogs per trip. Many of the dogs have already been selected for adoption before they arrive at the shelter and they are all adopted quickly. Skye is a recent transport and you can see that she is in a happy home with her new brother and is living the good life!

Tracy Voss is the Executive Director of Tracy?s Dogs. Along with her partner, Scott Whyatt, Tracy is devoted to shelter rescue and adoption of rescued dogs. Tracy?s Dogs promotes dogs available for rescue and adoption by making You Tube videos of them and posting them on their website, www.tracysdogs.org. Some of the videos are aired on KSAT TV or posted on the KSAT website. Tracy?s Dogs transports dogs to Austin and out of state locations for adoption. In 2012 through June, they have made 11 transports and have transported 173 dogs.
One great story is about Rufus, an Irish Wolfhound mix. He was picked up as a stray from the streets in San Antonio and showed signs of abuse.
Tracy?s Dogs rescued him and found a home for him in Virginia with a family that has an Irish Wolfhound. Rufus now lives on a 263 acre horse farm with his new brother.
Providing foster care for a transport dog is a 3 ? 4 week commitment. The foster parent will bring the dog in for a medical and behavioral evaluation to certify the dog for transport; then they bring him to the send-off. It?s a great experience: it saves a dog?s life, and it makes his new family very happy. For more information about providing foster care, see http://talkaboutitsa.org/how-and-where-to-foster.
