5 consequences from the drought that's drying out America

Drought-damaged corn on a Michigan farm. (Robert Ray/AP)

The worst drought in a generation is punishing farmers and burning up the nation's corn crop. Nearly 65 percent of the nation is experiencing a drought right now, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Many farmers were just trying to get over last summer's dry spell when the hottest June on record rolled in, threatening to destroy crops and desiccate pastures.

While it's still unclear exactly what the drought will mean for the U.S. environment and economy, a few concerning consequences are already apparent. But experts predict other worrisome outcomes yet to come. (If you have stories or photos about how the drought is affecting you, share them with us here.) Here are a few consequences that could crop up due to the drought:

1. Rising food prices at home

The U.S. Department of Agriculture warned last week that Americans should expect to pay 3 to 5 percent more for groceries next year because of the drought. Most of the price hikes will be for chicken, pork, beef and dairy, since the dry weather is scorching up the nation's corn crop, which feeds these animals. Soybeans and wheat prices are also on the rise. Other fruits and veggies, most of which are irrigated, aren't likely to be as affected.

2. World food prices and social unrest

While no one likes to have to pay more for food, Americans are on the whole much less vulnerable to food price spikes because, on average, they spend less than 15 percent of their budgets on food. In developing nations, such as India, food spending accounts for nearly half of the average household's funds. While experts don't know for sure how the drought will affect world food prices, many nations depend upon America's corn, soybean and wheat exports. Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Japan, Peru,?South Korea and East African countries are the most dependent on U.S. corn imports, the Guardian reported last week. Food prices and social unrest have been closely correlated over the past five years, leaving experts to fear a repeat of ?2007 and 2010, when waves of social unrest followed food cost hikes.

3. Sad, skinny animals at county fairs

Though far less serious than some of the other drought outcomes, the AP reports that prize animals showing up at state and county fairs this summer are far skinnier than their prize-winning ancestors. In one Wisconsin-area fair, entries were down by two-thirds, as farmers said they were too busy struggling to stay afloat with their dried-up pastures and the rising cost of feed to enter into the contests at all.

4.?Wildfires

Firefighters have been battling wildfires in Nebraska, Arkansas, California, Texas, Colorado and other states this summer. Extra-dry conditions mean more fires are likely as the summer stretches on.

5. Barges stuck on riverbeds, roads buckling

The drought is taking its toll on key transportation and infrastructure in the country. The Mississippi River has gotten so low that barge operators are worried they will get stuck while navigating it. They've had to lighten their loads, which means taking more trips to transport $180 billion in?grain, coal and other goods. Meanwhile, roads are buckling, water pipes are bursting, and power lines are burning up in wildfires due to the nine-month drought, reports The Texas Tribune.

Female Business Travel: Is Your Employer Keeping You Safe ...

Today, women hold one in five senior management positions globally and make up 45 percent of the corporate travel market. In other words, there are more women traveling for business than every before. However, organizations still have a long way to go when it comes to providing the right travel safety advice to female employees. Areas of concern include sexual and opportunistic crime, managing cultural sensitivities, and understanding local systems and health risks.

In a recent pre-travel training program for women in business, International SOS found that 75 percent of those surveyed felt that their organization should be more prepared to address the specific travel needs of women.

Compared to 2011, International SOS has seen a 20 percent increase in the number of women travelers calling its Assistance Centres for medical and travel security advice, with 751 women calling in the last two months and 400 in June alone.? ?

With that in mind, here are some health and safety concerns to keep in mind for women traveling abroad:

1. Access to medication which may be in short supply in less-developed or low-income countries

  • Make an appointment with your doctor or travel clinic for a basic checkup at least 6-8 weeks before you depart. If you have an ongoing medical condition, ask your doctor about any additional precautions you?ll need to take while away and find out if any vaccinations or health checks are required for your destination.
  • Always take a medical kit wherever you go, and consider packing medical items in a personal carry-on bag so it will not be affected if checked luggage is lost or delayed. We?d advise you to carry your medication in its original packaging, and keep copies of your prescription with you.
  • Women travelers can be susceptible to urinary infections and thrush, and there can be side effects from certain kinds of malaria tablets. If you think you may be at risk, ask your doctor if you can take some medication with you.

2. Sanitary supplies and contraception

  • If you are due for a period while you are away, it would be wise to take sanitary supplies with you as they may be unavailable in some cultures. Alternatively, you may wish to speak to your doctor about continuing your contraception to avoid having a period while away.
  • If the issue of contraception comes up, make sure that you plan ahead, discuss contraception with your doctor, and consider packing supplies. If you suffer from diarrhea while away, this can interrupt the absorption of the pill and may leave you unprotected.

3.? Risks to personal safety

  • Dress modestly to avoid drawing attention to yourself, avoid wearing expensive jewelery, and respect local clothing customs. If you do receive attention from local men, ignore any propositions or suggestive comments they may make.
  • When walking alone in the street, keep your handbag and luggage away from passing traffic. Familiarize yourself with your itinerary, walk purposefully, and avoid using a map in full view. It is also a good idea to separate your credit cards from your cash; if one source is lost or stolen, you still have a backup.
  • When driving, roll up windows to within a few inches of the top, park in well-lit areas, and always lock your doors.
  • Ensure your hotel room numbers remain confidential. Do not display the room's key tag in public areas, and stress to the front desk that your room number should not be given out to any inquirers. When checking in, ask the receptionist to write the room number down, rather than tell you within earshot of others.
  • Insist that the hotel room has a key chain, deadlock, and spy hole, and that the door and window locks work properly. Never open the door to anyone without taking precautions. If someone claims to be a member of staff, get their name and department and check with reception.

4. Implications for pregnancy while traveling

  • If you?re planning to travel while pregnant, be sure to see your doctor well in advance. Make sure your travel health insurance covers pregnancy-related conditions and neonatal care. It?s also worth checking your airline?s rules for pregnant passengers, as some require a letter from your doctor confirming your stage of pregnancy.
  • Water quality can vary widely, so only drink boiled or bottled water ? and plenty of it - and avoid ice. Avoid any pre-peeled fruit or salad; only eat fruit and vegetables that you?ve peeled and washed yourself.
  • Avoid malarial zones, if possible. Even when taking anti-malarial drugs, pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to the illness, which tends to affect them more severely.
  • Steer clear of destinations higher than 12,000 feet in altitude, as it?s unknown what effects this may have on an unborn baby.

5. Know your surroundings

  • Finding out some information about your destination can be very important, while assumptions can be quite dangerous. Start by finding out which time zone your destination is in early on, so you can start mentally and physically preparing for the adjustment.
  • Have you been there before? Do you know where the office is located and what local contacts will be available to support you? If not, speak to colleagues at home and abroad who may be able to provide you with this information.
  • Some countries offer female-only hotels, which you may prefer to stay in. When booking your hotel room, keep in mind that floors 3-6 give good security, as they?re far enough away from the lobby area but are still reachable by a fire engine in the event of an emergency.
  • Will you be able to review the streets surrounding your hotel and the route to the office in the daylight? An understanding of the basic geography of the city and potential trouble spots may be invaluable, so look up the hotel website and speak to work security experts and people who?ve visited the country before.

These tips are courtesy of International SOS, which offers a number of security measures for women traveling abroad, including an emergency hotline and pediatric services.

EYES ON LONDON: US men look for gymnastics gold

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

CHASING THE ELUSIVE GOLD

The U.S. men's gymnastics team is looking to win its first team gold since 1984 when it hits the mat Monday morning.

Danell Leyva will anchor the Americans in the event, which begins at 11:30 a.m. local time.

Leyva will compete in four of the six events and serve as the last man up for the U.S. on the high bar, the team's final event.

The U.S. topped qualifying Saturday, but scores are reset in the finals.

National champion John Orozco will do everything but the floor exercise for the U.S., while Sam Mikulak will compete on the floor, still rings, pommel horse and parallel bars.

Jake Dalton will perform on the rings, vault and floor, with two-time Olympic medalist Jonathan Horton working on the rings and high bar.

___

SIMPLY MAGICAL

"It's magical, simply magical," said rising swim star Yannick Agnel, after surpassing the U.S. team to win a gold medal for France in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay. "We didn't have too much pressure. We did what we know how to do. Now, Olympic champions. It's brilliant."

NBC'S TWITTER RETORT

NBC's executive producer of the games, Jim Bell, has taken to Twitter to answer critics.

James Poniewozik, Time magazine TV critic, tweeted that "NBC tape delay coverage is like the airlines: its interest is in giving you the least satisfactory service you will still come back for."

That drew a quick response from NBC's Bell: "You do know that all sports events are being streamed live right?"

"I do, indeed!" replied Poniewozik. "Have enjoyed it. Apparently a lot of folks still prefer watching it on TV."

GAME FACE

The expression on this horse's face is priceless.

The horse's name is Sofarsogood, ridden by Malin Petersen of Sweden. AP photographer David Goldman captured this image Sunday as they exited the ring after competing in the equestrian eventing dressage phase. In dressage, horse and rider walk, trot and canter to a standard test without jumps that are designed to test the animal's obedience.

MISSING KEYS

London police lost a set of keys last week to Wembley Stadium, an Olympic soccer venue in west London, Scotland Yard said. But officials say security wasn't compromised.

Although the keys haven't been found, there was no evidence of criminal offenses, the force said. They believe police probably misplaced the keys.

Organizers of the London Olympics stressed that relevant locks have been changed and there was no security breach. Police declined to provide more details about what the keys were for.

FLASHBACK: LONDON 1948

The 2012 games may be known as the first iPhone games, but the last time the Olympics were held in London also marked a technological milestone. In the 1948 London games, more than half a million Brits watched the events on the 80,000 television receivers then in operation, the first time that medium had been part of the reporting of the games. Most coverage in North America was still through radio and newspaper, as there were no comparable television networks.

THREE CHEERS FOR CHEERING

There's cheering and then, well, there's cheering.

A female fan of the Venezuelan boxing team isn't shy about urging her fighters on in the ring. From her balcony seat she shouts words of encouragement in Spanish in a loud, singsong voice that pierces through the arena.

On Sunday the crowd watching Gabriel Maestre Perez of Venezuela defeat Iran's Amin Ghasemi Pour enjoyed her more than the bout. They cheered her when she yelled, then started responding with a collective cheer every time she shouted.

When Maestre Perez won, many of the fans turned and clapped for her instead of him. She was finally silent at the moment, doing just the sign of the cross in relief.

LOUD PANTS

Did you see those argyle pants Norway's curling team wore for the winter Olympics and think, "I wish they made something like that for the beach?"

Neither did I.

But American beach volleyball players Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser did.

The defending gold medalists took to the sand for the first time on Sunday night wearing a funky red, white and blue boardshort designed by Loudmouth, the same company that made the much-discussed pants the Norwegian curlers wore in the Vancouver Games. They narrowed it down from eight choices to three they'll wear in London.

Rogers told the AP's Janie McCauley this spring that he doesn't care what the clothes look like as long as they fit well so they don't distract him while he's playing.

"I don't think anyone's ever worn anything like this at the Summer Games," he said after beating Japan in their opener on Sunday night. "It's different. It's fun. Beach volleyball is a fun game, so I think they go hand in hand."

___

THE DAY'S ACTION

So, two more swimming world records were broken on Sunday and Spain's highly favored football team tumbled out of medal contention after losing to Honduras.

American Dana Vollmer won the 100 butterfly in a world record and was followed by Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa, who set a world mark to win the 100-meter breaststroke.

The biggest surprise of the day came from France's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team, which upset the favored United States and Australia.

FOREBODING SKIES

It's a personal battle against the elements that evokes the drama of the high seas. But this is an Olympics K1 canoe slalom event in a man-made environment in east London.

In a single frame, AP photographer Kirsty Wigglesworth has captured a man's bid for glory under foreboding skies.

GATES HERE

AP's Steve Wade saw Bill Gates as he slipped into the table tennis venue to watch Ariel Hsing. "I'm wishing her good luck but she has a really great opponent," said Gates. "She's done very well to get this far."

He asked if Gates had ever won a point off Hsing. "Not legitimately. She beat me when she was 9, easily. She has been nice to me in social situations."

Banking on Windows tablets, Microsoft creates mobile add-ons

While a hot accessory alone won?t sell a mobile device, it never hurts to generate buzz and interest. Microsoft is doing just that by announcing relatively inexpensive and eye-catching new keyboards and mice for Windows 8 computers and tablets. One keyboard case doubles as a tablet stand.

With the first Windows 8 Surface tablets expected to go on sale October 26, Microsoft is wasting no time to introduce supporting Bluetooth accessories. On Monday, the company announced three new mice and two keyboards designed for Windows 8. All five products will soon be available at prices ranging from $49.95 to $79.95.

While all of these can be paired with a laptop or desktop, it appears to me that Microsoft has mobile devices ? Windows 8 tablets ? mostly in mind. The designs are elegant but portable, and one ? the Wedge Mobile Keyboard ? has a case the doubles as a tablet stand. Here?s a run-down on the new peripherals, with images from the Windows Experience blog:

Wedge Touch Mouse ($69.95). This new mouse is small enough to fit in a pocket and uses a wedge-shaped design. The mouse uses BlueTrack Technology, so it can be used on practically any surface. A special mode will power down and sleep the mouse in tandem with the computer it?s connected to, in order to save battery life.

Wedge Mobile Keyboard ($79.95).?This keyboard is thin but offers a full-sized layout of keys, including some for controlling media and Windows Hot Key shortcuts. A protective cover sits atop the keyboard and when removed, acts as a ?wedge? stand for a Windows tablet.

?

Sculpt Touch Mouse ($49.95). This traditional-looking mouse doesn?t appear to be easily pocketable but should be a snap to carry in a laptop bag. It offers a four-way touch scroll strip, making it easy to navigate through apps, web pages or documents with one finger.

Sculpt Mobile Keyboard ($49.95). Ergonomics in a mobile keyboard? Yup. This one uses Microsoft?s Comfort Curve design to help keep your hands and wrist in a more natural typing position. Battery life is saved through a sleep mode after some inactivity along with an instant wake feature through a key tap.

Touch Mouse ($79.95). Microsoft?s new touch mouse supports several gestures and swipes. For example, a single finger swipe moves or shifts content, while two fingers are used to manage apps, switch through open apps or show app commands. Three fingers work to zoom in or out of content while a thumb gesture moves forward and back within an app; think of stepping through pages in the browser.

Will these well-designed accessories along help sell Windows 8 tablets? That?s doubtful, because Microsoft has to first deliver on Windows 8, both for x86 and ARM chips. But when I think back to two examples of accessories that can help push consumers over the edge and generate buzz on new gadgets, I need only mention Apple?s Smart Cover for iPad and Microsoft?s own Touch Cover for Windows 8 tablets.

Both of these innovate pieces of hardware complete the mobile package and make the host tablets that much more usable, cool and appealing. It?s a smart move for Microsoft to build buzz now through keyboards and mice that will help Windows 8 tablets look even better later this year.

China wins 2nd straight Olympic gold in gymnastics

Judges review a complaint by Japan during the Artistic Gymnastic men's team final at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Monday, July 30, 2012, in London. Britain was initially announced as the silver medalist but Japan questioned the score of three-time world champion Kohei Uchimura on pommel horse, the team's very last routine. About five minutes later, Uchimura's score was revised and Japan was awarded the silver while Britain was bumped down to bronze. (AP Photo/Julie Jacobson)

(AP) ? When there's gold to be gotten, don't ever doubt the Chinese.

When there's silver and bronze on the line, don't count anyone out.

The Chinese won their second straight Olympic title and third in four games Monday, making fools of everyone who wrote them off after a dismal performance in qualifying.

"After getting up from bed I thought we were going to win it," said Chen Yibing, one of only two holdovers from the Beijing squad. "We have the abilities and the skills."

China's score of 275.997 points was more than four points better than Japan, which needed help from a DVR to finish second.

Britain initially was announced as the silver medalist, setting off raucous celebrations at the O2 Arena, Princes William and Harry included. The British don't have a proud history in gymnastics ? barely any at all ? and this was their first men's team medal in a century.

But Japan questioned the score of three-time world champion Kohei Uchimura on pommel horse, the very last routine.

While judges huddled around a video screen, the British partied and Uchimura and his teammates sat stone-faced against a wall.

"I couldn't say anything," Uchimura said. "I couldn't think anything at the very beginning. I was thinking, 'It's fourth, it's fourth.'"

About five minutes later, though, it's silver.

Uchimura's score was revised, with judges giving him seven-tenths more credit for his dismount. Instead of 13.466, he scored 14.166 ? enough to move Japan from fourth to second with a total of 271.952.

Britain was bumped down to bronze, while Ukraine dropped to fourth.

"To win a medal in your home games, I'll take that any day," Kristian Thomas said. "We never actually had the silver in our hands, so there's no real disappointment."

Tell that to the Japanese, who were bested by the Chinese yet again.

Just like everybody else.

"Even after it was changed, I was not too happy," Uchimura said.

China now has gone eight years without losing at a major competition.

The Americans, hoping for their first Olympic title since 1984 after finishing No. 1 in qualifying, lost all hopes for a medal with a dismal showing on pommel horse, their second event. They rallied to finish fifth.

"It didn't go as planned today," U.S. champion John Orozco said. "I can't help but feel personally responsible because I did five events ? I did the most out of everyone ? and I botched on two of them. It hurts."

For the Chinese, it was pure joy.

When Zhang Chenglong finished on pommel horse, China's last routine, he let out a roar. Chen bent over and covered his face with his hands, unable to stop the tears.

The Chinese have been like playground bullies most of the last decade, sauntering into every competition and scooping up as many gold medals as possible ? the last five world titles and at the Sydney and Beijing Olympics, where they won all but one of the men's medals. They probably would have claimed that, too, had they bothered to contend for vault.

This victory may have been even more special because of the team's struggles during the last two years.

With most of the Beijing squad moving on and a rule change putting a premium on all-arounders, China has looked ? dare we say it? ? vulnerable. Chen even tried to dampen the expectations this spring, saying it would be "extremely hard" for the Chinese to defend their title. It didn't get any easier when Teng Haibin, the 2004 gold medalist on pommel horse, dropped out with an injury Thursday and had to be replaced by Guo Weiyang.

An abysmal performance in qualifying only furthered the doubt when they finished sixth. Sixth!

Yet there they were Monday, walking off the floor he way they always do, index fingers in the air and gold medals around their necks.

"We don't have any faults. That's our secret to beat the Japanese and to beat everyone," Zhang said. "In preliminaries, we had a little bit of faults. But tonight was completely perfect."

China doesn't have Japan's stylish elegance, Britain's youthful exuberance or even the Americans' flair for the dramatic. What the Chinese do have, however, is sheer, brute strength, and they simply steamrolled the rest of the field. Chen set the tone in the very first event on still rings, where he is the defending Olympic gold medalist and four-time world champion.

Simply watching the event makes most folks grab their arms and scream for mercy. He flips from one skill to another with silky smoothness ? at one point lifting his head a bit higher as if to say, "Oh, you liked that one? How about this?" The cables stayed perfectly still when he did a somersault into a handstand, the veins bulging in his arms and neck the only signs of exertion.

The Chinese only got better from there, with half their 18 scores at 15.6s or higher. Compare that to Japan, which had five, or the British, who had four.

By the time China got to pommel horse, the last routine, all it had to do was plot a new victory celebration. Sure enough, when Zhang's score posted, the team pulled out big gold stars, and held them in the shape of the symbol on the Chinese flag.

Japan was still waiting to go, but any last chance it had of catching the Chinese disappeared on floor exercise. Kazuhito Tanaka's foot slid out from underneath him on the landing of a tumbling pass, and he skidded forward. He put his hand down and managed to stay upright, but they could not recover from his 13.733.

"Our rivals were not necessarily stronger than in previous years," Zhang said, "so we kept a cool mind."

Microsoft Crowned Top U.S. Spammer -- Again

Microsoft has topped a list of biggest U.S. spammers for five out of the past 15 months, and for some of those months it ranked No. 1 in the world, according to a University of Texas study to flag the worst offenders in an effort to get them to improve their security.

Based on results culled from spam block lists, researchers found that Microsoft IP addresses were responsible for a big enough volume of spam to top their SpamRankings.net list for the U.S. in April and May 2011, and in March, April and June of this year, which is the latest ranking, says John S. Quarterman, a senior researcher with the project at the McCombs School of Business at UT Austin. (See also When Viagra Comments on Your Blog and Other Spam Red Flags."

NEWS: Cybercriminals no longer control the third largest spam botnet, researchers say

BLACK HAT: Cyber-espionage operations vast yet highly focused, researcher claims

The project analyzes raw data about where spam traffic comes from and tracks down what organization owns the offending IP addresses. The raw data is gathered by groups outside UT, and the Microsoft rankings are based on those compiled by Passive Spam Block List.

While Microsoft didn't respond to requests for comment over the past week, Quarterman says one factor in the high volume of Microsoft spam may be that part of it is MSN, the Microsoft portal that includes its ISP. "Its purpose is to let people have access to the Internet, and that means people have their own computers, which may have all sorts of security problems," he says.

Outbound spam from an organization indicates a security problem, Quarterman says, sometimes because machines have been compromised by botnets and sometimes because users have fallen to phishing ploys. Either way, it means security should be tightened up.

The goals of the research project are to reduce spam and improve organizations' security by drawing attention to their rankings in the hopes that public scrutiny and pressure from customers and peers will encourage them to do something about it.

It worked for at least one medical center in California, according to the center's CIO who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The CIO of the center contacted the CSO after it was ranked at the top of the top medical-profession spammers. "The CIO told me, 'Get us off this list,'" the CSO says.

It turns out that certain end users had fallen for phishing emails purporting to come from the medical center's IT staff. The email said they had exceeded their email storage limits and should click on a link to get it increased. The link triggered a popup window that asked for their user names and passwords. Some users complied, and the credentials were used to get the attackers into the mail server via Outlook Web Access. Once there, they used the server to send spam, the CSO says. Educating end users about how to recognize phishing attempts brought down outbound spam from tens of thousands per day at its peak to less than 100 per day, the CSO says.

SpamRankings.net is running experiments with its rankings, says Andrew Whinston, a professor at the Center for Research in Electronic Commerce at the UT business school. For example, it is ranking the biggest spammers in certain countries and publishing the list, but ranking them in other countries but keeping the list private. The experiment is meant to see whether the entities ranked publicly drop off the list faster than those for which there is no public ranking, Whinston says.

The lists could be used for marketing purposes, Quarterman says. A business could note that its rival, for example, appeared repeatedly on the list and use that as a competitive advantage. Or a business that appeared on the list could say it responded quickly and has fallen off the list.

Depending on the results, the research could indicate that legal requirements to publicly post data security stats about businesses could drive them to be more secure, Whinston says. "Then we'd know how to present that information to the public" to have the greatest beneficial impact, he says.

"We're not trying to solve the spam issue," he says. "We're trying to deal with the broader issue of whether companies should publicly report security issues."

Bo wife murder charge vexes skeptical Chinese

BEIJING, China (Reuters) - China's ruling Communist Party might insist that the murder charge against Gu Kailai, the wife of ousted Politburo member Bo Xilai, is a simple case of all being equal before the law, but winning over the jury of public opinion is proving tough.

Since China's last big political scandal -- the purge of Shanghai party chief Chen Liangyu in 2007 -- its citizens have flocked to sign up to the Twitter-like microblogging site Sina Weibo, ensuring this time there will be lively public debate about the case against Bo and Gu, despite tight censorship.

In its first official statement on Gu's case since April, state news agency Xinhua ran a brief report last week saying China will try Gu on charges of murdering a British businessman. The news spread rapidly on Weibo.

While state media generally stuck to reprinting that story, the influential tabloid the Global Times on Friday wrote an editorial warning nobody was above the law.

But that is a line the party is going to have a hard time convincing people is true, as suspicion swirls that populist politician Bo and his wife Gu are victims of a power struggle -- and no more corrupt than other Chinese leaders.

People already have little faith in government statements despite repeated pledges to be transparent, after the SARS cover-up in 2003, among others, and refusal to discuss events such as the 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in Beijing.

"Who on earth could believe this?" wrote one microblogger, of the Global Times editorial. "Bo has just lost his personal battle; this case has never had anything to do with the rule of law."

Others thought Xinhua's wording that "the crimes are clear, and the evidence is irrefutable and substantial" ruled out any pretence at Gu getting a fair trial.

"It looks like the court is just going to be reading out the Xinhua piece ... What a shameless society without governance. I hope it collapses."

Bo, 62, was widely seen as pushing for a spot in China's new leadership until he was felled by the scandal brought to light by his former police chief, Wang Lijun.

Bo has not been named as a suspect in the murder case, but he has separately been accused of violating party discipline, sometimes code for corruption and abuses of power, and he could face trial at a later time.

NOT A SIMPLE CASE

Gu has been in police custody for months on suspicion of involvement in Heywood's murder, though few details of the motive or the crime itself have been publicly released. State media said previously that he was killed after a financial dispute.

Xinhua said that the economic dispute between Gu and Heywood involved her son, Bo Guagua, who graduated from Harvard University this year and is still believed to be in the United States. It reported Gu believed Heywood was threatening her son.

Waiting for a meeting in a glass office tower in Shanghai's financial district, Lu Zida, a telecommunications specialist in his 30s, said that as a parent he could relate to Gu's maternal urge to protect her child.

He was, however, under no illusions that the case was as simple or straightforward as it appeared in state media reports.

"This is certainly not a simple criminal case. It's very complex -- money, power and politics," Lu said. "A mother must protect her children. If I was in her position I would do the same if someone was threatening my child. There's no reason not to."

In the steamy southwestern metropolis of Chongqing, once Bo and Gu's stomping ground, a group of five 20-something rural migrant workers said Bo was well-liked for improving the city and cracking down on organized crime.

"He was a political star," said one of the young men, who said he and his friends came from Fengdu, a rural part of Chongqing.

"He's done for now, but the ordinary people still have fond memories of him," said the young man, who declined to give his name. "His wife was the one who caused him this trouble."

Yu Kun, a Chongqing billboard advertising salesman, said he felt for Bo.

"We all love Bo Xilai. We feel that it's about a political struggle," Yu said. He pointed to the unfinished, ultra-modern opera house and science museum jutting out on the other side of the river as evidence of Bo's ability and large ambition.

"Of course, there's corruption," Yu said, when pressed over the allegations against Gu. "In China, everything, everyone has to be corrupt. It's all about the hidden rules. They were no different, but they didn't stand out from the rest either."

Door clues can pinpoint home's construction date | Real Estate ...

Top 5 details to look for

Top 5 details to look for

Arrol Gellner
Inman News?

There's a little parlor trick I like to pull when I'm doing consulting at people's homes. I ask them what year their home was built, and before they can answer, I quickly stop them with a raised hand.

"No, don't tell me," I insist. After a brief show of Kreskin-like concentration, I give them my guess with a flourish. I'm almost always within five years of the correct year of construction. Often, I'm within two years, and occasionally I'm right on the money. The look of astonishment on the homeowners' faces is always gratifying.

Like most parlor tricks, this one is easy to explain. It relies on a simple and rather prosaic yardstick found in every house: its doors. Unless the place has gone through one of those ghastly home-improvement-emporium "renovations" -- in which case the owners would not bother to call me in the first place -- the doors are usually original to the house, offering a clear indication of when the place was built.

Right off the bat, a quick glance at the door panel arrangement will usually get you within 10 or 15 years of the construction date. For example, very tall doors with pairs of narrow vertical panels are a dead giveaway to Victorian-era work, yielding a construction date between 1850 and 1900. This broad range can be further narrowed using another test: The more ornate the doors, the later in the 19th century the house was built.

Doors with four stacked horizontal panels, on the other hand, indicate a Craftsman-era pedigree -- roughly 1900 to 1925. Those with a single large recessed panel indicate a vintage between 1925 and 1950 or so. Doors with no panels at all -- so-called flush or slab doors -- point to a modernist-era construction date between the early 1950s and 1980. Molded hardboard doors imitating various traditional panel arrangements point to a construction date between 1985 and the present.

The type of lockset that's installed in a door furnishes other clues. If the door has a mortise lock (evidenced by a tall, skinny plate in the door edge and doorknobs fastened to a square shaft by setscrews), the house almost certainly predates 1925, although such locks were still used in basement rooms and garages for another decade or two.

On the other hand, doors with just a small rectangular latch plate in the door edge invariably mean the house postdates 1920 -- the year when Walter Schlage invented the easier-to-install cylindrical lockset that quickly drove the mortise lock off the market.

Doorknobs, too, have a tale to tell. Mortise locksets with ornate metal or glass knobs suggest late 19th-century construction dates, while those with plain white, brown or black glass knobs are more typical of early 20th-century houses. Cylindrical locksets with knobs resembling giant glass jewels easily peg a home's construction date between 1920 and 1935.

Even hinges can provide clues. Ornate hinges with spiky ornamental pins typify Victorian-era houses. Hinges with plain leaves and ball-tipped pins hark from the Craftsman era, but remained popular through the Depression. Hinges with plain, flat-tipped pins indicate houses postdating World War II, while those with round-cornered plates are a hallmark of mass-produced prehung doors, putting a home's construction date after 1970.

Is 'Dancing' pro Derek Hough quitting the show?

Frederick M. Brown / Getty Images

    By Anna Chan, TODAY

It sounds like 10 seasons of "Dancing With the Stars" might be enough for pro hoofer Derek Hough. In an interview with USA Today, the three-time mirror-ball trophy winner said that the upcoming "All-Stars" season "is kind of my swan song. It's my last hurrah."

According to the fan and judges' favorite, he's ready to focus his professional attentions elsewhere. Hough, who has been part of the ballroom bash since season five, took a break from the show in spring 2011. Instead of showing off his perfect footwork on "Dancing's" stage, he filmed a starring role in the dance movie "Cobu," which is expected to be released next year.

"This show is full time ... there is zero flexibility," Hough told USA Today of "Dancing's" grueling schedule. "And I want to do other projects. I want to push myself into other areas. ... And this is my 10th season, a great benchmark."?

If he does indeed leave "DWTS" to pursue other showbiz opportunities, Hough won't be the first to do so. His sister Julianne is also a pro dancer, and appeared on seasons four through eight of "Dancing" before hanging up her barely-there sequined outfits for a music and film career.?

"Dancing With the Stars: All Stars" premieres on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. on ABC. The cast is expected to be announced on Friday morning.

Which of Derek's many dances on "DWTS" over the seasons is your favorite? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Leave Prostate Cancer Untreated? | TV Ears News and Views

    Jul 27, 2012

Do you or does someone in your family have prostate cancer? This year alone, about 240,000 men will be given this diagnosis, 81 percent of whom will discover the disease at a very early age. But treatment can be intense.

Many men who receive this diagnosis will choose aggressive treatment, including removal of the prostate and radiation. However, of those who do so, many will end up impotent, incontinent, or both. As a result, men want to know - are there any other options?

What if you didn't treat the cancer at all? According to "The Well Column", a New York Times blog, "about 10 percent of men choose a different strategy: no treatment at all. The decision to forgo surgery or radiation is controversial, and is often met with resistance from a man?s own doctors and family members."

But a new study is supporting that simply "watching" the disease may be a very logical decision for those diagnosed. The study, published just last week, showed that "men with early-stage disease who opt for watchful waiting are just as likely to survive as men who undergo surgery."

?Men have a strong belief that if they are diagnosed with cancer, they will die from the cancer if it?s left untreated, and they believe that treatment will cure them,? said Dr. Wilt, professor of medicine at University of Minnesota School of Medicine and lead author of the report. ?This study adds to growing evidence that observation can be a wise and preferred treatment option for the vast majority of men. It allows them to live a similar length of life and avoid death from prostate cancer and avoid the harms of treatment.?

    Tajik forces end military offensive

DUSHANBE (Reuters) - Tajik President Imomali Rakhmon called off a military offensive on Wednesday after rebel fighters agreed concessions to end a battle that had killed 42 people, security officials said.

The ceasefire followed a campaign to capture former warlord Tolib Ayombekov in a remote mountain region next to Afghanistan, a show of strength by a government whose control over parts of the Central Asian state remains tenuous 15 years after a civil war.

Twelve soldiers and 30 rebels were killed during fighting on Tuesday, officials said. Shops and markets reopened on Wednesday in Khorog, capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous region and the closest town to the fighting deep in the Pamir mountains.

"The decision was taken to avoid further bloodshed, after the (rebel) field commanders promised to make concessions," a source in the presidential administration told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

He declined to say what concessions had been promised.

Security forces had earlier demanded the handover of four rebels, including Ayombekov, accused of murdering the regional head of the State Committee on National Security on Saturday. Maj.-Gen. Abdullo Nazarov was dragged from his car and beaten to death.

Defense Minister Sherali Khairulloyev travelled to the region for talks with rebel fighters and offered amnesty to those who turned in their weapons, a high-ranking official in the security services told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

"The main demand from our side is that the four people directly involved in the killing of Abdullo Nazarov are brought to justice," the source said. Ayombekov evaded capture during the offensive.

Tens of thousands of people died in Tajikistan during its 1992-97 civil war, in which Rakhmon's secular government, backed by Moscow, fought a loosely-aligned opposition that included many Islamist fighters.

Russia still has 6,000 troops stationed in Tajikistan, its largest military deployment abroad and a bulwark against the threat of Islamist violence spilling across the Afghan border after NATO pulls its troops out in 2014.

After much wrangling over conditions, Russia and Tajikistan agreed in principle this month to extend Moscow's lease on its military base for another 49 years.

"A military stand-off with the opposition would definitely weaken (Rakhmon's) internal position, making him more pliant in his relations with Moscow," said Arkady Dubnov, a Moscow-based Central Asia analyst.

"He has been a virtual steamroller that has suppressed political opposition, but the growing clout of armed gangs will pose an increasing challenge as the troop pullout from Afghanistan gets nearer," he said.

"It's an open secret that he no longer controls large chunks of his own country."

    FRAGILE AUTHORITY

Gorno-Badakhshan, separated from Afghanistan by the raging Pyandzh river, is an autonomous region where the authority of central government is fragile. Most of the 250,000 population sided with the opposition during the civil war.

Most communications in Khorog, 500 km (300 miles) southeast of the capital Dushanbe, were cut off for a second day. A local resident, able to communicate via a satellite link, told Reuters that fighting had not spread to the town itself.

"We heard shooting, but we didn't see any troops," he said. "Last night we checked on our neighbors, and everybody was safe and sound. Nobody has bombed the town."

Ayombekov, who has denied involvement in Nazarov's death, fought with the opposition during the civil war and was among former fighters to receive government jobs in the peace deal that ended the conflict.

But the GKNB, successor to the Soviet-era KGB, has said his gang had for many years been involved in smuggling drugs, tobacco and precious stones.

"The restoration of order in Gorno-Badakhshan is long overdue. The authorities have long discredited themselves by allowing local mobsters to run business in the region when they should be in jail," said Dushanbe-based analyst Ramzan Sharipov.

"There will not be a second civil war in Tajikistan," he said. "The operation comes at a good time for the president, a year before scheduled elections, and will be portrayed by authorities as a show of strength and centralized power."

Rakhmon, in power for two decades, is widely expected to be re-elected in 2013 for another seven-year term.

    Defiant Iran ups uranium enrichment

Iran is defiantly forging on with its controversial nuclear activities by activating hundreds more uranium enrichment centrifuges, according to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

"There are currently 11,000 centrifuges active in enrichment facilities" in Iran, he was quoted by state media as saying late on Tuesday in a meeting with supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior regime officials.

That was more than the 10,000 centrifuges Iran was last said to have had operating, according to a May 25 report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Ahmadinejad's reported comments did not give a more precise figure nor detail how many centrifuges were now working at each of Iran's two enrichment sites: Natanz and the heavily fortified underground bunker of Fordo.

Fordo has emerged as one of the most contentious points in fruitless negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 group of nations, which comprises the top UN Security Council powers the United States, Britain, France, Russia, and China, plus Germany.

The Security Council has demanded Iran suspend all uranium enrichment and has imposed four sets of sanctions to pressure it to comply. The IAEA, the UN's nuclear watchdog, has said it suspects there is a military dimension to Iran's nuclear programme.

The United States and the European Union have added their own sanctions on Iran, but the Islamic republic has defiantly said it would continue with its nuclear activities.

The IAEA report in May said there were 9,330 installed centrifuges in Natanz, of which 8,818 were being fed uranium hexafluoride gas to produce enriched uranium.

The Fordo facility, near the holy city of Qom, had 696 working centrifuges, the report said.

The enrichment activities have produced stockpiles of uranium enriched to purities of 3.5 percent and 19.75 percent.

Iran says the former is to fuel its nuclear power reactor in the southern city of Bushehr, while the higher-grade uranium is to make medical isotopes for cancer patients in its Tehran research reactor.

Western powers, though, fear the 19.75-percent enriched uranium could, in just a few technical steps more, be processed into bomb-grade, 90-percent uranium.

Iran insists its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful, but has rebuffed repeated attempts by the IAEA to expand its ongoing surveillance and inspections, notably to include a suspect sprawling military facility in Parchin, outside Tehran.

Rupert Murdoch's Exit From UK Boards: Basic Business Or Latest ...

Rupert Murdoch BSkyBLast week, Rupert Murdoch resigned from the board of News International, the holding company of News Corp?s UK newspapers, as well as other subsidiary boards connected with News Corp in the UK and the U.S. News Corp explained the move as corporate housecleaning ahead of a restructure that will split the conglomerate into two distinct publishing and entertainment companies. Some watchers have been skeptical, suggesting this is a further step in putting distance between Murdoch and the UK print assets that have been embroiled in a phone-hacking and bribery scandal for more than a year. The taint was emphasized today when eight former employees of the now-shuttered News Of The World, including erstwhile News International chief exec Rebekah Brooks, were informed they would face criminal charges in relation to phone hacking. Other watchers see this as potentially setting the stage for a sale by News Corp of the UK papers which now include The Sunday Times and tabloid The Sun. If Murdoch no longer sits on the News International board, in other words, it makes it more plausible for a sale of that company to go through down the line. Still another view is that distancing himself from his beloved British press holdings is a means to clear the way for the acquisition of the long-coveted 61% stake in British satcaster BSkyB that News Corp does not already own.

Enders? senior analyst Douglas McCabe tells me he?s ?sort of sitting on the fence? as to the reasons behind Murdoch stepping down from the boards. ?In the end, it is about a sensible restructuring and governance and it is necessary to go through these steps.? But, he adds, ?I do also think it?s about reputation and Rupert drawing a line under the whole complex business in the UK.? Ken Doctor, media analyst for Outsell and Newsonomics, calls the move off the boards ?both symbolic and real? but says, ?At the same time, clearly the whole purpose of the split (of News Corp) is to remove the tainted assets from the entertainment corporation, and any way you can remove the Murdoch name from it doesn?t hurt it with the endgame being BSkyB in 2014.?

News Corp abandoned its $12B bid for the remaining 61% of BSkyB last year amid the first tidal wave of the phone-hacking scandal. Although Murdoch has recently said he?s more interested in spending his money in the U.S., conventional wisdom says he is unlikely to give up on BSkyB. Removing himself from the boards of the scandal-plagued UK print business paves the way for reps of the News Corp entertainment company, which would be the one to acquire the BSkyB stake, to say, ?Yes, it?s true there were some issues, but we found those people responsible and worked with the law. The guilty have been punished and the separation is complete, so we?re a good citizen,? Doctor opines. He calls Murdoch ?a long player? and suggests that his recent steps are ?a small opening move on the chess board.?

It?s not as if there isn?t precedent within the Murdoch family and its businesses. Back in February, James Murdoch resigned as executive chairman of News International, it was said, to focus on pay-TV operations in New York. But when he later exited BSkyB?s chairman post he said, ?I am aware that my role as Chairman could become a lightning rod for BSkyB and I believe that my resignation will help to ensure that there is no false conflation with events at a separate organization.? BSkyB is still under scrutiny from UK regulatory body Ofcom over whether News Corp is fit to hold a broadcast license ? an investigation that also stems from the phone-hacking issues in the print division. The younger Murdoch remains a non-executive director at BSkyB, but in March, he severed ties with News Corp?s UK print operations.
