Rule of Thumb?: For most people, it takes some time to see and respond to a falling object. You can find out just how long it takes in this activity, and the answer may surprise you!Image: George Retseck

Introduction
Think fast! Have you ever noticed that when someone unexpectedly tosses a softball at you, you need a little time before you can move to catch it (or duck)? That's because when your eyes see an incoming signal such as a softball, your brain needs to first process what's happening?and then you can take action. In this activity, you can measure just how long it takes for you to react, and compare reaction times with your friends and family.
Background
You may not realize it, but when your senses pick up clues from the outside world?the smell of baking cookies, the color of a stoplight, the rrrring! of an alarm clock?it takes a fraction of a second for you to recognize that signal and respond. During that time your brain receives information from your senses, identifies a possible source, and allows you to take action. The jam-packed fraction of a second is called your reaction time.
This activity teaches you about your brain's reaction time, but it also relies on the laws of physics. Specifically, you can calculate your reaction time using our handy chart, which is based on how quickly a ruler falls. How do we know how quickly your ruler will fall? Gravity pulls all objects toward Earth's center at the same speed. If you want to try this out at home, try dropping a tennis ball and a basketball from the same height: They should both hit the ground at the same time!

Preparation
??? ? You need to use some math skills in this challenge. To make things easier, we've provided a chart, above, that you can print or copy out on a piece of paper. The basic rule: 100 milliseconds translates into about two inches or five centimeters.
??? ? On a clean sheet of paper, write the name of each person?including yourself?who will take part in this experiment. You only need two people for this activity, but it's also great for a group. Leave five spaces below each name.
Procedure
??? ? Hold the ruler vertically so that the zero end hangs down.
??? ? Ask your partner to stand next to you and place his or her hand below the ruler's zero line, ready to catch the ruler when it falls by pinching it between his or her thumb and index finger. Your partner's fingers should be just below the ruler, but as close as possible to the bottom edge without touching or overlapping.
??? ? Tell your partner that you will count from one to five and drop the ruler at some point during the count. Your partner will need to catch the ruler as quickly as he or she can, pinching the ruler between his or her fingers.
??? ? Count from one to five and drop the ruler at some point
??? ? Your partner should catch and pinch the ruler. How fast did your partner appear to act? Did your partner's fingers pinch near the zero line?
??? ? Write down the centimeter or inch line where your partner's fingers pinched the ruler.
??? ? Calculate how long it took your partner to respond using the chart provided. Was your partner as fast as you thought?
??? ? Repeat the drop four more times for your partner, and record the measurement each time. Does your partner's reaction time change? Are the five reaction times different? Vary when you drop the ruler: For example, you could drop on the count of five first, then drop on two.
??? ? Switch tasks and try catching when your partner drops the ruler, then compare your results with the others. Do most people have a similar reaction time? Are older people faster than younger people? Are girls faster than boys?
??? ? You can also try a few variations: What happens when you tell your partner when you will drop the ruler? Does reaction time improve with practice?
??? ? Extra: Ambidextrous, anyone? Repeat this activity and compare your results when you use your dominant hand?the hand you write with?and when you use your other hand. Is there any difference between hands?
??? ? Extra: Consider adding other distracting sounds and sights?such as turning on a TV set or flicking a flashlight on and off?during the activity. Do your responses slow with so many sensory signals?
Financial aid totaled $54,000, but Joe Mihalic slashed costs to pay off his $101,000 in student loans. Despite top MBA programs' financial aid, students can still graduate with six-figure debt. ??
By Gail MarksJarvis,?Chicago Tribune (MCT) / May 23, 2012
A woman walks by buildings on the campus of Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., last week. Including living expenses and lost income from quitting a job, the costs of an MBA at Harvard and other top business schools can reach $300,000, leaving even high-earning grads with huge debts.

Joe Mihalic wasn't thinking at all about how he was going to pay off?student?loans?_ which would end up totaling $101,000 _ when he was accepted to Harvard Business School.
"I assumed all would take care of itself; that I would go to Harvard, get a high-paying job, and everything would be OK. I was completely naive."
Then, when he graduated from Harvard with an MBA in 2009, got the six-figure job he wanted, bought a home and started paying $1,057 a month on his?student?loans?each month, the naivete started to dissipate. Two years after graduating, he had paid $22,000 toward his?loans?and saw he still had $91,000 more to go due to accumulation of interest.
It was a shocking revelation, a signal that he was trapped with overwhelming debts that would control how he could live his life. Not only had he barely made a dent in the principal after two years of payments, but he had $42,000 in interest to pay over the next 10 to 15 years.
He never questioned the value of getting his Harvard MBA, and he liked his job managing a business development division for Dell in Austin, Texas. But with debt payments arriving every month, he realized he had lost flexibility in his life. He knew that if he lost his job it could be a disaster. He would have to think twice about rocking the boat at work, balking if he was overlooked for a promotion or taking a job that paid less even if it would allow him "to make a valuable contribution to the world."
"I didn't want a gun to my head every time I thought about this," he said. "I felt trapped."
It's a revelation that few?students?contemplate as they apply for programs, said Sandy Kreisberg, an MBA admissions consultant. "All they want is to get into a top program."
After acceptance, they might ask about financing, but most, like Mihalic, think an MBA will deliver wealth, and they need not fret about money, Kreisberg said. That tends to be true of top MBA programs, although jobs have been more difficult to get since the 2008 financial crisis.
More top MBA programs are trying to help?students?with scholarships, and some compete for?students?with top GMAT scores by offering aid, said John Byrne, editor of Poets & Quants. For example, Mihalic received $54,000 from Harvard.
But with costs of some top MBA programs about $300,000, based on a Poets & Quants analysis that includes living expenses and lost income from quitting a job, debt can be oppressive. And when considering MBA programs, pay attention to the effect of scholarships on cost, plus the job placement rates at each school, when applying, said Byrne.
Levels of debt vary substantially between schools, even those in the top 10 or 20. At Harvard, Byrne said, the average MBA?student?in 2011 had $77,880 in debt, similar to Stanford at $77,599. The University of Pennsylvania's The Wharton School was highest with $114,339. Sometimes top private colleges can helpstudents?more than public ones.
Despite high costs, Byrne said MBA?students?have the lowest default rates on?student?loans, about 20 percent. MBA graduates have the advantage of relatively high pay, with base salaries averaging $91,400 in 2011, said Byrne. PayScale Inc. put the median salary in 2012 for MBA graduates at $83,500, but $136,000 for MBA graduates of the country's top 30 business schools as ranked by Bloomberg Businessweek.
A higher salary allows?students?to take on substantial debt and live within a rule of thumb in education finance. That is: Borrow no more than what your first year of annual pay is likely to be.
In addition, it's wise to stick with federal Perkins and Federal Grad PLUS?Loans?because they include forgiveness programs, such as limiting debt payments to 10 percent of a person's income and forgiving debt that's left after 20 years.
While those rules can take some pressure off?students, Mihalic didn't want to pay?loans?for 10 years. He put himself on an austere lifestyle. He sold a car, took in two roommates, stopped going to movies, didn't take dates to dinner, skipped trips and friends' weddings and even carried his own flask of liquor when he went to bars with friends.
He blogged about it, and in seven months he was debt-free except for his home. Now, he said, he's so used to an austere lifestyle, it's difficult for him to spend money.
If you are looking for financial aid for college students, the first thing you need to do is fill the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA). This is the form used to apply for all types of state, college and federal grants, scholarships and student loans. You will receive a report showing the amount your family will contribute towards your college education. The financial aid office in your college of choice also uses this report to determine your eligibility and calculate your financial aid package.
The federal government offers a variety of college financial aid programs that students and parents can consider. These include low interest federal direct subsidized and unsubsidized loans, parent PLUS loan, graduate PLUS loan, subsidized Stafford loans, Pell grant and the Perkins loan offered to college students who demonstrate exceptional need for college financial assistance. States also offer student aid programs and grants for needy students who desire to pursue further education. For you to qualify for these programs, you have to live, and study in the specific state. Working students can also benefit from the education tax benefits.
Excelling in academics and other extracurricular activities will improve your chances of finding financial aid for college. Throughout your high school career, strive to achieve above average grades and test scores so you will be able to meet the standards for merit based scholarship programs. Most colleges and universities have financial aid options for the best performers but you have to maintain top grades throughout to qualify for the scholarship programs every year.
If you excel in a certain sport or any other extracurricular area, this can increase your chances of winning scholarships and financial aid as it makes you stand out from the rest of the applicants. You will also be eligible for athletic scholarships and other special programs.
Other financial aid for college application tips include start planning for college early, not going for the early-decision college application option, considering a variety of sources of students aid, going through the application forms before sending them out to catch any errors and ensuring you send out the correct information without exaggerating or including the wrong information. Parents need to look at the way they portray their expenses as these can hurt or improve the student?s financial aid chances. When applying for outside scholarship programs, keep in mind that these may not reduce your family?s contribution. External scholarships awards will help you if you have a college financial aid package with more loans than grants.

A SENIOR Technical Officer at the University of Ghana Medical School, Eric Nai Kwadae and his friend, Nii Ako Ashong, are reported dead after enjoying a delicacy of pork soup with cooked rice and Agya Appiah bitters, an aphrodisiac.
Eric Nai Kwadae and his friend Nii Ako Ashong, both 53, were found dead in the former?s residence at Teiman on Sunday at about 6am while two others, Boye Annang, 33 and Ayi Ayeh, 30 were found unconscious.
The two bodies have been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue while the two survivors are currently on admission at the Ridge Hospital in a critical condition.
The remainder of the food, drink and soup has also been taken for a forensic analysis.
DSP Freeman Tettey, Accra Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, who briefed DAILY GUIDE, narrated that on Saturday May 19, Kwadae travelled from Accra to his village, Teiman with his driver, Samuel Tetteh Adamah, to a funeral where he met his three friends, one of whom died also.
He took the three and his driver to his home where he prepared the food with which he served them Agya Appiah bitters.
According to the police, the driver, Samuel Adamah, declined eating the food because he does not eat pork.
The four paddies ate the food while watching the Chelsea and Bayern Munich match.
Samuel later retired to bed, leaving the four who were still watching the football and enjoying their meal.
He however woke up in the morning at about 6am and found Kwadae and Nii Ako Ashong dead while Boye Annang and Ayi Ayeh lay unconscious in the hall.
The Adenta police are investigating the matter.
Mr Tettey explained that the police suspected no foul play but did not rule out food poisoning.
To use a word that has been overapplied to Girls, there?s a realness to The L.A. Complex that is almost shocking. Sure, the Angelenos are all beautiful and buff, but the rules of the real world still apply. (We see them working for those toned torsos, after all.) When Abby?s car?which was also, effectively, her home?breaks down, her friends can?t leave their day jobs to come to her rescue, and since she has no money for a cab, she becomes the first person in TV history to ride a city bus to an audition. The show?s big love story, and certainly its most passionate, is between Tariq and Kaldrick, and unlike so many of the sexless gay relationships on TV, their love scenes are just as explicit as the straight couples?. (Not terribly explicit, that is, but at least the censorship is consistent.) And the kids of The L.A. Complex are just as dumb and messy as real twentysomethings: After Ecstasy-gobbling Abby and boozed-up Connor have unprotected sex, Abby dutifully takes the morning-after pill ? and an hour later finds herself puking into the piano at an important audition.
Baseline characteristics of children with mild persistent asthma predict response to ICS Public release date: 22-May-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

ATS 2012, SAN FRANCISCO A further analysis of a previously published National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) funded study of children with mild persistent asthma reports the relative benefits of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) treatment varies among children with differing demographic and clinical characteristics.
"We performed post-hoc data analysis on 288 children enrolled in the TReating Children to Prevent Exacerbations of Asthma (TREXA) study performed by the NHLBI funded Childhood Asthma Research and Education (CARE) Network," said Lynn Gerald, PhD, MSPH, professor in the Department of Health Promotion Sciences and associate dean of research in the College of Public Health at the University of Arizona. "Our findings suggest that all children with mild persistent asthma benefit from ICS treatment, but some groups benefit more than others."
The TREXA trial compared four ICS treatment strategies: daily treatment (daily), daily treatment plus symptom-targeted treatment (combined), symptom-targeted only treatment (rescue), and placebo. Daily treatment, but not combined or rescue treatment, reduced the time to first exacerbation compared with placebo, and all three strategies reduced treatment failures. Time to treatment failure was defined as time to an oral corticosteroid-requiring exacerbation and treatment failure was defined as experiencing two or more oral corticosteroid-requiring exacerbations.
In post-hoc subgroup analyses using either time to first exacerbation or time to treatment failure as an outcome, children in the daily and combined groups who were younger (6-11 yrs versus 12-17 years), were non-Hispanic, had eczema, were skin test positive, and who had IgE levels >185K/uL experienced treatment benefit as compared to those assigned to placebo. Among children assigned to the rescue group, the results were similar to those above when using time to treatment failure as an outcome; however, when using time to first exacerbation as an outcome, only those with eczema, high IgE levels, and less than perfect asthma control during the run-in period were demonstrated to benefit when compared to placebo.
"Our study indicates that some groups of children with mild persistent asthma have greater exacerbation risk than others and therefore have more to gain from ICS treatment for reducing this risk," said Dr. Gerald. "These findings need to be validated in future studies."

Abstract Body
Introduction: When taken daily, inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) reduce exacerbations among children with mild persistent asthma. The TREXA trial compared 4 ICS treatment strategies: daily treatment (daily), daily treatment plus symptom-targeted treatment (combined), symptom-targeted only treatment (rescue), and placebo. Compared to placebo, daily treatment, but not combined or rescue treatment reduced the time to first exacerbation (TFE); however, all 3 strategies reduced treatment failures. Stratified analyses identifying subgroups most responsive to ICS treatment are presented here.
Methods: In this 44-week, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial, children and adolescents 5? years of age with mild persistent asthma were enrolled from 5 clinical centers across the US. Participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatment groups: daily ICS plus symptom-targeted ICS (combined), daily ICS only (daily), symptom-targeted ICS only (rescue), and placebo. To maintain blinding all children were provided with a daily ICS inhaler (active or placebo) and a rescue ICS inhaler (active or placebo). The daily ICS regimen consisted of 1 40?g actuation twice a day and the symptom-targeted regimen consisted of 1 40?g puff of ICS to accompany each puff of albuterol used for symptom relief. The combined group used both treatments. The primary outcome was TFE defined as an oral corticosteroid-requiring exacerbation and a secondary outcome was TF defined as >2 oral corticosteroid-requiring exacerbations. Statistical analysis compared the median TFE within a subgroup of each active treatment group versus the same placebo subgroup. Within each subgroup, proportional hazards regression was used to detect any significant differences compared to placebo. Resulting p-values were recalculated using the Hochberg adjustment for multiple comparisons. Clinical center, age group, and satisfaction of eligibility criterion were included as covariates. A separate but identical analysis compared the median time to TF among treatment groups and within subgroups.
Results: 843 children and adolescents were enrolled and 288 were randomized to combined (n=71), daily (n=72), rescue (n=71), and placebo (n=47) treatment. Tables 1 and 2 show the stratified results for TFE and TF, respectively. Some subgroups were more responsive to the ICS doses used including children who were younger, male, white, non-Hispanic, and who had allergic asthma.
Conclusions: In TREXA, certain demographic and baseline clinical characteristics were related to responsiveness to steroids. Research to validate these findings is warranted.
