Loughner to plead guilty in Arizona shooting spree

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Jared Loughner, the man accused of killing six people and wounding then-U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords in 2011, is set to plead guilty in a Tucson court on Tuesday, a person in Washington familiar with the case said.

The source confirmed that the federal government believed Loughner was now competent to stand trial and will argue that in court on Tuesday. Loughner is willing to change his plea to guilty at the previously scheduled hearing, the source said.

Psychiatric experts who have examined Loughner were scheduled to testify in a mental competency hearing on Tuesday that he was competent to stand trial and understood the 49 charges against him, the Los Angeles Times reported earlier.

The team of four attorneys representing Loughner had not responded to emailed requests for comment.

Giffords, an Arizona Democrat seen as a rising star in the party, was holding one of her regular "Congress On Your Corner" events at a Tucson supermarket in January 2011 when she was shot through the head at close range by a gunman who killed six other people, including a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl.

Loughner, 23, is charged with 49 criminal offenses including first-degree murder over the shooting rampage, which wounded 13 people. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf last year.

The Wall Street Journal, which also reported that Loughner would plead guilty, said Tuesday's mental status hearing had been changed to a change-of-plea hearing, citing an official familiar with the case.

If U.S. District Judge Larry Burns were to determine at Tuesday's hearing that he was fit for trial, Loughner - who is being forcibly medicated to treat his psychosis - could face the death penalty if found guilty.

The Los Angeles Times said it was unclear on the details of the plea arrangement, or whether Loughner would plead guilty to all or just some of the charges in exchange for prison time rather than risk being sentenced to death at trial.

Tuesday's hearing was to be Loughner's fourth to determine if he is fit to stand trial. Burns ordered the hearing in June at the request of prosecutors and defense attorneys who wanted a status report after more than a year of treatment and legal wrangling over his mental competency.

The college dropout was determined unfit for trial in May 2011 after experts said he suffered from schizophrenia, disordered thinking and delusions.

Loughner has been held at a U.S. Bureau of Prisons psychiatric hospital in Springfield, Missouri, where he is forcibly medicated against his will to treat psychosis and make him fit for trial.

Giffords resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives in January to focus on her recovery. Her former aide Ron Barber won a special election to fill her seat and will have to win re-election in November to serve a full two-year term.

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera's towering fly ball was headed toward left-center field - and at first, the Detroit slugger couldn't tell if it would clear the fence.

When it did, the Tigers celebrated perhaps the most spectacular comeback of the 2012 baseball season.

Cabrera hit a two-run homer to cap a stunning five-run rally by Detroit with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Tigers a 10-8 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday. Cleveland has lost nine straight, and this one slipped away in unthinkable fashion.

With two outs and nobody on - and the Indians up 8-5 - Chris Perez (0-3) walked Alex Avila and pinch-hitter Andy Dirks. Austin Jackson doubled home a run, and Omar Infante's two-run single tied it.

Cabrera followed with his 27th homer, which finally came down beyond the fence in left-center.

"It was a little scary," Cabrera said. "It was high. I was not sure if I hit it out. I'm glad."

It's the first time all season a team has trailed by at least three runs with two outs and nobody on in its last at-bat and come back to win in that inning, according to STATS, LLC. The last time it happened was Sept. 27, when Arizona scored six runs in a similar situation to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-6.

The Tigers never led this one until the end. They rallied to tie it after trailing 3-1, 4-3 and 5-4 - then managed their remarkable comeback in extra innings.

"You never know what's going to happen," Cabrera said. "You've got to make 27 outs."

Actually, the Indians got 29. Even that wasn't enough.

"This is very deflating," Cleveland manager Manny Acta said. "You never believe it is going to happen. Even with Infante at the plate, I'm feeling confident because we've got two out, a two-run lead and our closer on the mound."

Travis Hafner and Ezequiel Carrera had hit back-to-back solo homers for Cleveland in the 10th.

Detroit's Darin Downs (1-0) earned his first career win.

The Tigers remained within 1 1/2 games of the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central, winning a wild game in which catcher Gerald Laird and manager Jim Leyland were ejected in the second inning.

Jackson and Infante had four hits apiece, including two triples for Jackson and a homer by Infante.

The Tigers nearly won it in the ninth when Jackson led off with a triple. After Josh Tomlin struck out Infante, Cleveland intentionally walked Cabrera and Prince Fielder to load the bases.

The Indians then brought Jose Lopez off the bench as an extra infielder, removing Shin-Soo Choo from right field and playing with only two outfielders. Quintin Berry hit a grounder to first baseman Carlos Santana, who started a home-to-first double play that sent the game to extra innings tied at 5.

Hafner hit his 200th career homer, and Carrera followed with his first. The Indians added another run in the inning, but it somehow wasn't enough.

"Nobody's heads were hanging," Jackson said. "I think that's the good thing. Everybody had their heads up and anything can happen in those situations."

Max Scherzer allowed four runs and 10 hits in five innings for the Tigers. He struck out nine - the ninth time he's done that this season - but the Indians chipped away against him.

Cleveland scored twice with two outs in the first on RBI singles by Michael Brantley and Hafner. Fielder answered with a run-scoring single in the bottom half for the Tigers, starting a pattern in which every time Cleveland scored, Detroit answered with at least a run in the bottom of the inning.

Choo's 13th home run of the year made it 3-1 in the third. Detroit scored a run in the third and tied it on Avila's RBI single the following inning. Santana brought home a run with a single in the fifth to give Cleveland a 4-3 lead, but Infante evened things up with a solo shot in the bottom half.

Cleveland starter Chris Seddon was pitching in the big leagues for the first time since Oct 1, 2010, when he was with Seattle. He was signed in January to a minor league contract.

The left-hander allowed four runs and seven hits in 4 1-3 innings.

Hafner's RBI single gave Cleveland a 5-4 advantage in the seventh. Fielder tied it with a sacrifice fly.

Vinnie Pestano came on with men on first and third on nobody out in the seventh and allowed Fielder's fly ball. It was the first of 15 inherited runners he's allowed to score this season.

Laird and Leyland were ejected after Laird hit a comebacker to the pitcher, and Seddon had to run to first with the ball amid some confusion over who was covering. Seddon went to tag Laird, who slid into first but was called out.

Moments later, Laird came out of the dugout, having apparently already been thrown out. Leyland was right behind him and argued with multiple umpires before being ejected by plate ump Joe West.

NOTES: The Indians designated RHP Jeremy Accardo for assignment so they could purchase the contract of Seddon from Triple-A Columbus. ... Cabrera was the DH on Sunday instead of playing 3B because of a sore ankle. ... ... The Tigers begin a four-game series against the New York Yankees on Monday night. Earth to Mars rover, Curiosity: Have you landed?

On Sunday night, millions of miles away, a nail-biter of a landing will be executed?or not?on Mars. The Mars rover, Curiosity, which has been traveling to the distant planet for the past eight-and-a-half months, will land on the red planet by remote control.

To stick the landing, the car-size rover must successfully slow down from 13,000 mph to zero in seven minutes, or "Seven Minutes of Terror," as the wildly popular video from NASA explains?which you can watch above.

Due to the long-distance signal from Mars to Earth, researchers won't know for an agonizing 14 minutes if the landing, programmed from Earth, is a success or an epic fail. The event has gotten so much attention that it will be broadcast live in Times Square.

During the short but tense wait, a sequence of events must fall into place for the landing of the 1,982-pound spacecraft to be successful, including using a parachute to slow it down, firing rockets to prepare for the landing, and carefully setting it in a crater to avoid a dust cloud. If all goes well, the craft will send out a signal that its landing was successful.

The Mars rover has already become somewhat of a celebrity, with its own Facebook page, and messages posted on its wall like this one from Issam Motawaj: "Very excited. We hope you will be a safe landing. Good Luck." And from Jeff Baber "I'm be watching!!! Love it!!!"

But the landing is just the beginning of what's hoped to be a two-year mission to explore signs of life on the planet. The rover, essentially a moving science lab, cost NASA $2.5 billion to build and comes equipped with 17 cameras, a 7-foot-long robot arm, and state-of-the-art science experiments and sensors weighing 125 pounds.

Bing Quock, assistant director of Morrison Planetarium at California Academy of Sciences, calls this "exciting times." He wrote in an email to Yahoo! News, "There are so many things that could go wrong, but it's not like NASA's engineers haven't thought it through. They have a way of performing the impossible, so I'll be watching the feed on the Internet that night with fingers crossed, hoping for the best. "

Researchers invent new tool to study single biological molecules

By blending optical and atomic force microscope technologies, Iowa State University and Ames Laboratory researchers have found a way to complete 3-D measurements of single biological molecules with unprecedented accuracy and precision.

Existing technologies allow researchers to measure single molecules on the x and y axes of a 2-D plane. The new technology allows researchers to make height measurements (the z axis) down to the nanometer ? just a billionth of a meter ? without custom optics or special surfaces for the samples.

"This is a completely new type of measurement that can be used to determine the z position of molecules," said Sanjeevi Sivasankar, an Iowa State assistant professor of physics and astronomy and an associate of the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory.

Details of the technology were recently published by the journal Nano Letters. Co-authors of the study are Sivasankar; Hui Li, an Iowa State post-doctoral research associate in physics and astronomy and an associate of the Ames Laboratory; and Chi-Fu Yen, an Iowa State doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering and a student associate of the Ames Laboratory.

The project was supported by lab startup funds from Iowa State University and a $120,075 grant from the Grow Iowa Values Fund, a state economic development program.

Sivasankar's research program has two objectives: to learn how biological cells adhere to each other and to develop new tools to study those cells.

That's why the new microscope technology ? called standing wave axial nanometry (SWAN) ? was developed in Sivasankar's lab.

Here's how the technology works: Researchers attach a commercial atomic force microscope to a single molecule fluorescence microscope. The tip of the atomic force microscope is positioned over a focused laser beam, creating a standing wave pattern. A molecule that has been treated to emit light is placed within the standing wave. As the tip of the atomic force microscope moves up and down, the fluorescence emitted by the molecule fluctuates in a way that corresponds to its distance from the surface. That distance can be compared to a marker on the surface and measured.

"We can detect the height of the molecule with nanometer accuracy and precision," Sivasankar said.

The paper reports that measurements of a molecule's height are accurate to less than a nanometer. It also reports that measurements can be taken again and again to a precision of 3.7 nanometers.

Sivasankar's research team used fluorescent nanospheres and single strands of DNA to calibrate, test and prove their new instrument.

Users who could benefit from the technology include medical researchers who need high-resolution data from microscopes. Sivasankar thinks the technology has commercial potential and is confident it will advance his own work in single molecule biophysics.

"We hope to use this technology to move that research forward," he said. "And in doing that, we'll continue to invent new technologies."
