WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama huddled with his top national security advisers at the White House for a Saturday meeting as the U.S. military prepared for a possible retaliatory strike against the Syrian government for its alleged use of chemical weapons against?civilians.

A White House official who disclosed the meeting indicated that the president made no decisions, but the high-level talks came as the Pentagon acknowledged it was moving U.S. forces into position in the region. The U.S. Navy has decided to increase the number of warships in the eastern Mediterranean Sea from three to four, all of them armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, according to news?reports.

Although Obama is still moving deliberately, advisers said there is a new sense of urgency within the White House after the deaths of hundreds of civilians, allegedly from poison gas, near Damascus on?Wednesday.

The ?winds have shifted,? as one official put?it.

Obama also called British Prime Minister David Cameron to talk over the developments in Syria. The two are ?united? in their opposition to the use of chemical weapons, the White House?said.

Antigovernment activists say hundreds of civilians were killed Wednesday when rockets with poison gas struck in the early morning hours. Obama has called for a U.N.?investigation.

Doctors Without Borders said Saturday that three hospitals in Syria it supports are reporting that they received approximately 3,600 patients displaying symptoms of exposure to toxic chemicals on the day of the attack last week in eastern Damascus. Of those patients, 355 reportedly?died.

The president made clear Saturday that he wants intelligence officials to continue working to collect evidence that chemical weapons were used and how they were deployed, an administration official said. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the administration had not reached a conclusion on who was responsible for the attack in Damascus. ?We?re still assessing that,? he?said.

The United Nations? top disarmament official, Angela Kane, arrived in Damascus on Saturday in a bid to convince the Syrian government to allow U.N. access to the sites of Wednesday?s alleged attacks. The U.N. is pushing to expand the mandate of a scientific team already in?Damascus.

The Syrian regime, which has denied the use of chemical weapons and sought to put the blame on the opposition, reportedly will allow U.N. inspectors to visit the site of last week?s?attack.

Report: Apple Buys Embark Transit App to Boost Maps

Apple Buys Embark

Apple has reportedly made another acquisition intended to bolster its struggling Maps app.

According to former Wall Street Journal reporter Jessica Lessin, Apple has purchased Embark, Inc. and will incorporate the company's tech into Apple Maps.

"We make mass transit simple," Embark says on its website. It has apps for transit systems in Boston, Chicago, New Jersey, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. with trip planning, interactive maps, and alerts.

It sounds similar to HopStop, another public transit app that Apple purchased in July. Also last month, Apple inked a deal to acquire crowdsourced location data company Locationary,

Apple confirmed the deal to Lessin. Embark did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Embark dates back to 2011. It was previously known as Pandav but re-branded as Embark in Jan. 2012. "We fell in love with the name Embark because it encompasses what we do now and our aspirations for the future," the company said at the time.

In Nov. 2012, BMW made a strategic investment in Embark, which was intended to help Embark "explore ways to partner with BMW and to expand geographically," the company said at the time. BMW is among the car manufacturers that has committed to Siri Eyes Free.

The Embark purchase comes after CEO Tim Cook publicly apologized for Apple maps in late September, even suggesting that users, in the meantime, use rival applications like Bing, MapQuest, and Waze (since acquired by Google).

Brazil's Rousseff's popularity rises in poll as economy stumbles

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff's popularity recovered from a recent drop caused by massive street protests as the government tried to deal with the sluggish economy and concern that inflation will rise, the Estado de S. Paulo newspaper reported on Friday.

Those Brazilians who consider Rousseff's administration "excellent" or "good" rose to 38 percent from 31 percent a month ago, the paper said, citing a poll conducted by Ibope public opinion research agency for the National Confederation of Industry.

The poll is the third to be released by the CNI and Ibope since a wave of protests began in June in several Brazilian cities against hikes in bus fares, poor public services, corruption and government spending on the soccer World Cup.

Since the protests have died down Brazil's currency has extended year-to-date declines to as much as 15 percent, fueling concern about inflation and a $60 billion currency intervention program aimed at halting the slide.

The central bank has already moved to fight inflation by raising interest rates, a move that could choke off economic growth.

Rousseff's excellent or good rating was 54.2 percent in June, the newspaper said, citing Ibope and CNI.

The poll showed the percentage of people who rated Rousseff's government "bad" or "terrible" fell to 24 percent from 31 percent from July. The percentage who considered Rousseff's performance "average" was unchanged at 37 percent.

Ibope conducted the poll among 2,002 Brazilians between August 15 and August 19. The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Linda Ronstadt said she knew something was wrong when she couldn't sing anymore.

Grammy-winning singer Linda Ronstadt has revealed to AARP that she has Parkinson's disease.

In an interview to be published next week on AARP.org, Ronstadt, 67, says that she realized something was wrong eight years ago when she found herself unable to sing and didn't know why.

"I knew it was mechanical. I knew it had to do with the muscles, but I thought it might have also had something to do with the tick disease that I had," she said. Although the interview excerpt didn't specify the tick-borne illness Ronstadt has, the AARP linked to a page on Lyme disease.

Ronstadt says she also experienced shaky hands, but thought it was because of an operation she had on her shoulder.

"Parkinson's is very hard to diagnose, so when I finally went to a neurologist and he said, 'Oh, you have Parkinson's disease,' I was completely shocked. I wouldn't have suspected that in a million, billion years," she revealed. "No one can sing with Parkinson's disease, no matter how hard you try."

Ronstadt, 67, said that she was diagnosed eight months ago, long after her symptoms first emerged. According to the AARP interview, she now uses a wheelchair when traveling, and has aid poles to assist her when she walks.

The singer has won 11 Grammys, two Academy of Country Music Awards, and even won an Emmy, for the PBS special, "Great Performances: Canciones de Mi Padre." She first came to prominence in the 1960s as lead singer of the Stone Poneys before embarking on a solo career. Her hits include "You're No Good," "When Will I Be Loved," "That'll Be the Day," "Blue Bayou" and "It's So Easy."

Ronstadt also made headlines for dating California Gov. Jerry Brown during his 1980 presidential bid. She was later engaged to "Star Wars" creator George Lucas.

The singer's memoir, "Simple Dreams," will be published Sept. 17, but she told AARP that it does not discuss her illness.

(AP) ? David Price gave up 10 hits, barely made it out of the fifth inning and was admittedly exhausted after walking off the mound for the last time.

Not a great combination for success, yet the reigning AL Cy Young winner still found a way to beat the Baltimore Orioles.

Evan Longoria and Matt Joyce homered, and Price grinded through the Baltimore batting order three times to help the Tampa Bay Rays earn a 4-3 victory Monday night in a duel between AL contenders.

Joyce hit a two-run drive in the fourth to break a tie and push the Rays toward their fifth win in six games. Tampa Bay moved within a half-game of the first-place Red Sox in the AL East, pending Boston's late game in San Francisco.

Price (7-5) was effective when it counted. He struck out six and allowed only two runs, as Baltimore went 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 against the left-hander.

"That's why he's one of the best pitchers in the game. He knows how to get out of jams like that," Orioles center fielder Adam Jones said. "When he needs a strikeout, he knows how to get it."

Price seemed relieved to survive.

"That's the most draining it has been in a while," he said. "This (Baltimore) team is just, they're tough. That's why they're in the position they're in right now. ... We made some pitches when we needed to, had some hard hit balls at some guys. You've got to have that good fortune sometimes."

Price has won four straight decisions since July 12.

"You have to give David credit," manager Joe Maddon said. "David did not have his best night, but nevertheless ... I really, really appreciated his effort."

So did Price's teammates.

"David didn't have his best stuff tonight, and he did a great job battling, really giving us a chance to win," Joyce said.

Fernando Rodney, the fourth Tampa Bay reliever, worked the ninth for his 28th save.

Baltimore starter Chris Tillman (14-4) gave up four runs and five hits in six innings. It was his first loss in seven starts since July 6.

Matt Wieters had three hits and a home run for the Orioles, who fell five games behind Boston. Baltimore outhit Tampa Bay 15-10 but stranded 15 and went 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position.

"We got a good pitcher out of the game in the fifth inning and put a lot of good at-bats up against Price and just couldn't quite break it open," Wieters said.

Tampa Bay went up 4-2 in the fourth when Joyce hit his 16th home run after Yunel Escobar drew a one-out walk. In the Baltimore half, Manny Machado and Chris Davis struck out with runners at the corners.

Price worked out of trouble in the fifth, using his 99th and final pitch to retire Steve Pearce on a sharp grounder with two outs and the bases loaded.

"You've got to have those line drives at guys, you've got to have guys making good plays in the field, and that's what we did tonight," Price said.

Wieters homered off Joel Peralta leading off the seventh, but Baltimore left runners at first and third.

Perhaps taking a cue from the Orioles, Tampa Bay loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth but did not score. In the bottom half, Baltimore wasted a one-out double by Davis.

Longoria put the Rays up 1-0 in the first inning with his 25th home run, the second in two days. He has 11 extra-base hits in his last 12 games, including four homers.

Singles by Escobar, Joyce and No. 9 hitter Kelly Johnson made it 2-0 in the second.

In the bottom half, Danny Valencia got the last of three straight Baltimore hits, an RBI double. Valencia, recalled from Triple-A Norfolk before the game, went 2 for 2 with a walk against Price and is 9 for 12 lifetime against the lefty.

The Orioles got three more hits in the third, including a run-scoring double off the center-field wall by Wieters to knot the score at 2. But Baltimore left two runners in scoring position for the second inning in a row.

NOTES: The game took 3 hours, 56 minutes. ... The Rays activated Desmond Jennings (finger) from the disabled list and optioned RHP Brandon Gomes to Triple-A Durham. Jennings started atop the lineup and went 1 for 4. ... J.J. Hardy, who turned 31 on Monday, started at shortstop for Baltimore after missing two games with back spasms. ... Alex Cobb (7-2) starts for the Rays on Tuesday night against Baltimore RHP Miguel Gonzalez, who's 5-1 at home. ... Price walked only three of 258 batters over his previous nine starts. In this one, he walked two of 27.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? NASA called off all attempts to fix its crippled Kepler space telescope Thursday. But it's not quite ready to call it quits on the remarkable, robotic planet hunter.

Officials said they're looking at what science, if any, might be salvaged by using the broken spacecraft as is.

The $600 million Kepler mission has been in trouble since May, unable to point with precision at faraway stars in its quest for other potential Earths. That's when a critical second wheel failed on the spacecraft. The first of four gyroscope wheels broke in 2012. At least three are needed for precise pointing.

Since it rocketed into space in 2009, Kepler has confirmed 135 exoplanets ? planets outside our solar system. It's also identified more than 3,500 candidate planets.

NASA expects to know by year's end whether the mission is salvageable. Kepler is already on an extended quest; its prime, 3?-year mission ended in November.

The spacecraft is 51 million miles from Earth, orbiting the sun.

If nothing else, new discoveries are expected from data collected over the past four years.

"This is not the last you'll hear from Kepler," promised Paul Hertz, NASA's astrophysics director.

"Kepler has made extraordinary discoveries in finding exoplanets, including several super-Earths in the habitable zone," said John Grunsfeld, a former astronaut who heads NASA's science mission office.

The habitable zone is the distance between a star and planet in which temperatures would permit liquid water and, possibly, life.

"Knowing that Kepler has successfully collected all the data from its prime mission, I am confident that more amazing discoveries are on the horizon," Grunsfeld said in a news release.

Engineers tried without success, over hundreds of hours, to revive the two disabled wheels. The spacecraft remains stable, with thrusters controlling its pointing with as little fuel as possible.

The costs and benefits of the remainder of this mission will be analyzed; results from a pair of studies are expected this fall, with decisions coming afterward.

Kepler's principal investigator, William Borucki of NASA's Ames Research Center in California, said no one knew at the beginning of Kepler's mission whether Earth-size planets were rare and whether Earthlings might be alone.

"Now at the completion of Kepler observations, we know our galaxy is filled to the brim with planets," Borucki said at a news conference. A large portion of these planets are small like Earth, not gas giants like Jupiter, he noted.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of more exoplanets are expected from Kepler findings, Borucki said. He said it would take another three years to analyze the remaining data.

"We literally expect ... the most exciting discoveries are to come in the next few years as we search through all this data," he said.

Plastic solar cells' new design promises bright future

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Harvesting energy directly from sunlight to generate electricity using photovoltaic technologies is a very promising method for producing electricity in an environmentally benign fashion. Polymer solar cells offer unique attractions, but the challenge has been improving their power-conversion efficiency. Now a research team reports the design and synthesis of new polymer semiconductors and reports polymer solar cells with fill factors of 80 percent -- a first. This number is close to that of silicon solar cells.
