Kenyan police detail car used in mall attack

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Kenya's counterterrorism police unit released closed-circuit television footage Sunday that showed two men entering a local bank where they collected money and paid for a car used to bring terrorists to Nairobi's Westgate Mall, indicating the deadly attack was planned weeks in advance, officials said.

Boniface Mwaniki, the head of Kenya's Anti-Terrorism Police Unit, said the men had gone to Barclays Bank on Sept. 6 and retrieved enough money to pay for the 340,000 shilling car (around $4,000). The Mitsubishi Lancer was found blocking the main entrance of the mall with two grenade pins inside, indicating the grenades had been thrown from inside the vehicle, Mwaniki said.

Several survivors of the attack, who were near the entrance of Westgate, said that the terrorists first lobbed grenades into the interior of the mall, a blast which caused the glass facade of a jewelry shop to shatter, stunning the unarmed guards, who abandoned their posts.

"If you know how a grenade works, you'd know that you remove the pin, and then you throw it (the grenade.) The pin gets dropped wherever you are," Mwaniki said, to explain how police used the location of the pin to identity the vehicle as the attackers' car.

Long after shoppers returned to the mall to retrieve their abandoned cars, the gray-colored Mitsubishi, with Plate No. KAS 575X remained unclaimed in front of the shopping center, he said.

The footage played for reporters on Sunday showed two men entering the Queensway branch of Barclays in Nairobi. One of the men is described as light-skinned, around 5-feet-8-inches tall and believed to be Kenyan of Somali origin, from Mandera, a town near the Kenya-Somali border, according to a statement. Police identified him as Abd Kadir Haret Muhamed, also known as Muhamed Hussen. They said that he spoke Swahili fluently, as well as Sheng.

The suspect is married to a Kenyan woman, Shurekha Hussen, who was recently arrested by police and helped investigators identify the second suspect, Mwaniki said.

The second man captured on camera is believed to be Somali, identified as Adan Dheq, also known as Hussen Abdi Ali as well as Abdulahi Dugon Subow, police said. He is 5-feet-5-inches tall, and speaks "broken" Swahili, according to the statement.

The newly released names come a day after Kenya's military spokesman identified four attackers, who were seen strolling through the mall, machine guns strapped to their bodies. It brings to six the number of suspects that have been identified so far for the Sept. 21 attack that left more than 60 people dead.

Mwaniki cautioned that the two suspects identified on Sunday may not have been inside the mall during the attack.

"We don't yet know. But it appears that these were the guys doing the logistics," he said.

The newly released footage also indicates that police are now honing in on the identities of the alleged terrorists, using DMV and insurance records, as well as data mined from financial transactions.

The attack on the Westgate Mall was claimed by the leader of al-Shabab, al-Qaida's affiliate in East Africa. Analysts had predicted that the attack could not have been carried out without the complicity of Kenyan nationals, and the identities of the alleged attackers revealed so far seems to support this conclusion.

What will China do with a billion people when robots take over manufacturing?

(NaturalNews) The United States has been automating its manufacturing for decades, adding robotics to replace workers, especially in the vaunted U.S. automobile industry.

The process has most definitely taken its toll on Americans with low- to mid-level skills. In fact, the U.S. has lost 6 million manufacturing jobs between 2000 and 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Many of those were lost due to globalization - the outsourcing of production to developing nations with cheaper labor forces. But a lot of those jobs were also lost due to automation.

Enter China.

China's manufacturing workforce set to shrink in the coming years

The economic miracle of Asia employs millions of low-skilled workers in factories that churn out everything from the latest dollar-store kitchen gizmo to supercomputers. That's good news for Chinese leaders; a working population is more politically stable than a poor, unemployed workforce.

But what would happen if that large workforce were replaced by robots? How much unrest - domestically and geopolitically - would a restless, underemployed China create?

Well, the fact is, turnabout is fair play; as U.S. workers fell prey to automation and robots in the 20th century, losing many jobs to places like China, the Asian giant appears to be on the verge of a robotics revolution itself. Per The Wall Street Journal:

A new worker's revolution is rising in China and it doesn't involve humans.

With soaring wages and an aging population, electronics factory managers say the day is approaching when robotic workers will replace people on the Chinese factory floor.

A new wave of industrial robots is in development, ranging from high-end humanoid machines with vision, touch and even learning capabilities, to low-cost robots vying to undercut China's minimum wage.

The paper says that, over the next half-decade, robotics technologies are sure to transform China's factories. And Chinese executives say that's fine with them, considering that there may actually, in the short term, be a labor shortage, as fewer of China's youth consider manual labor as a way to make a living.

But clearly change is coming, and how it plays out will affect both how much of the world's electronic manufacturing remains in China and how the massive shift from human to robotic labor will affect the country's working demographic.

No one believes that China's shift to automation will happen overnight. Most executives, in fact, believe the process will take years, because the challenges are many, including the high cost of advanced robots, technical limitations and little flexibility in bringing robots to factory floors.

"If your orders decrease, you can lay off workers," Tim Li, senior vice president of Taiwanese PC contract manufacturer Quanta Computer Inc., told WSJ. "You can't lay off robots."

Robotics is good for Chinese manufacturers, but not so much for Chinese workers

Across the way in Taiwan, a company there - Delta - sees the coming robotics transition in mainland China and is acting. The firm is working to develop robots cheaply enough to replace human workers in China's gargantuan factories.

"It's clear that automation is the future trend in China, but the big question is how to bring down the costs for robots," Delta Chairman Yancey Hai told the paper. "We believe we can do that because we manufacture two-thirds of the components ourselves."

Much of this development could pan out for U.S. firms and American workers too, in the form of U.S. companies that manufacture robots. Some human workers will always be needed in the manufacturing process.

But if China's development leads to massive lay-offs of otherwise unskilled workers, where will they go? What will they do? Will they be "retrained" to do something else, or be left behind, as many American workers were?

The answers to these questions will decide the fate of China's future, as well as the future of stability in China's Asian neighborhood.

Kenya's military spokesman names attackers

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? A military spokesman on Saturday confirmed the names of the four fighters implicated in the attack on the upscale Westgate Mall in Kenya's capital last month, an assault that turned into a four-day-long siege, killing at least 67 people.

Major Emmanuel Chirchir said the attackers were Abu Baara al-Sudani, Omar Nabhan, Khattab al-Kene and Umayr, names that were first broadcast by a local Kenyan television station. "I confirm those are the names of the terrorist," he said, in a Twitter message sent to The Associated Press.

The identities of the men come as a private television station in Nairobi obtained and broadcast the closed circuit television footage from the Nairobi mall. The footage shows no more than four attackers. They are seen calmly walking through a storeroom inside the complex, holding machine guns. One of the men's pant legs appears to be stained with blood, though he is not limping, and it is unclear if the blood is his, or that of his victims'.

The footage contradicts earlier government statements which indicated that between 10 to 15 attackers were involved in the Sept. 21 attack, although the footage may not show all of the assailants that took part on the attack. Terrified shoppers hid behind mannequins, inside cardboard boxes, in storage rooms, in ventilation shafts and in the parking lot underneath parked cars, many hiding for hours before help arrived.

Al-Shabab, al-Qaida's affiliate in neighboring Somalia, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was revenge for Kenya's military intervention in Somalia in 2011 that was aimed at flushing out the extremists.

Little is known about the identities of the attackers, beyond their names.

Matt Bryden, the former head of the United Nations Monitoring Group on Somalia and Eritrea, said via email that al-Kene and Umayr are known members of al-Hijra, the Kenyan arm of al-Shabab. He added that Nabhan may be a relative of Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, one of the most-wanted al-Qaida operatives in the region and an alleged plotter in the 1998 bombings at U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania that killed more than 250 people. He was killed in 2009 when Navy SEALS led a strike in the town of Barawe in Somalia where he was hiding.

Early Saturday, foreign military forces carried out a pre-dawn strike against fighters in the same southern Somali village. The strike in Barawe took place in the hours before morning prayers against what one official said were "high-profile" targets, without providing further details. A Western intelligence official said it appeared likely that either U.S. or French forces carried out the attack. Both insisted on anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.

A resident of Barawe ? a seaside town 240 kilometers (150 miles) south of Mogadishu ? said by telephone that heavy gunfire woke up the population.

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama huddled with his top national security advisers at the White House for a Saturday meeting as the U.S. military prepared for a possible retaliatory strike against the Syrian government for its alleged use of chemical weapons against?civilians.

A White House official who disclosed the meeting indicated that the president made no decisions, but the high-level talks came as the Pentagon acknowledged it was moving U.S. forces into position in the region. The U.S. Navy has decided to increase the number of warships in the eastern Mediterranean Sea from three to four, all of them armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, according to news?reports.

Although Obama is still moving deliberately, advisers said there is a new sense of urgency within the White House after the deaths of hundreds of civilians, allegedly from poison gas, near Damascus on?Wednesday.

The ?winds have shifted,? as one official put?it.

Obama also called British Prime Minister David Cameron to talk over the developments in Syria. The two are ?united? in their opposition to the use of chemical weapons, the White House?said.

Antigovernment activists say hundreds of civilians were killed Wednesday when rockets with poison gas struck in the early morning hours. Obama has called for a U.N.?investigation.

Doctors Without Borders said Saturday that three hospitals in Syria it supports are reporting that they received approximately 3,600 patients displaying symptoms of exposure to toxic chemicals on the day of the attack last week in eastern Damascus. Of those patients, 355 reportedly?died.

The president made clear Saturday that he wants intelligence officials to continue working to collect evidence that chemical weapons were used and how they were deployed, an administration official said. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the administration had not reached a conclusion on who was responsible for the attack in Damascus. ?We?re still assessing that,? he?said.

The United Nations? top disarmament official, Angela Kane, arrived in Damascus on Saturday in a bid to convince the Syrian government to allow U.N. access to the sites of Wednesday?s alleged attacks. The U.N. is pushing to expand the mandate of a scientific team already in?Damascus.

The Syrian regime, which has denied the use of chemical weapons and sought to put the blame on the opposition, reportedly will allow U.N. inspectors to visit the site of last week?s?attack.

Report: Apple Buys Embark Transit App to Boost Maps

Apple Buys Embark

Apple has reportedly made another acquisition intended to bolster its struggling Maps app.

According to former Wall Street Journal reporter Jessica Lessin, Apple has purchased Embark, Inc. and will incorporate the company's tech into Apple Maps.

"We make mass transit simple," Embark says on its website. It has apps for transit systems in Boston, Chicago, New Jersey, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. with trip planning, interactive maps, and alerts.

It sounds similar to HopStop, another public transit app that Apple purchased in July. Also last month, Apple inked a deal to acquire crowdsourced location data company Locationary,

Apple confirmed the deal to Lessin. Embark did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Embark dates back to 2011. It was previously known as Pandav but re-branded as Embark in Jan. 2012. "We fell in love with the name Embark because it encompasses what we do now and our aspirations for the future," the company said at the time.

In Nov. 2012, BMW made a strategic investment in Embark, which was intended to help Embark "explore ways to partner with BMW and to expand geographically," the company said at the time. BMW is among the car manufacturers that has committed to Siri Eyes Free.

The Embark purchase comes after CEO Tim Cook publicly apologized for Apple maps in late September, even suggesting that users, in the meantime, use rival applications like Bing, MapQuest, and Waze (since acquired by Google).

Brazil's Rousseff's popularity rises in poll as economy stumbles

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff's popularity recovered from a recent drop caused by massive street protests as the government tried to deal with the sluggish economy and concern that inflation will rise, the Estado de S. Paulo newspaper reported on Friday.

Those Brazilians who consider Rousseff's administration "excellent" or "good" rose to 38 percent from 31 percent a month ago, the paper said, citing a poll conducted by Ibope public opinion research agency for the National Confederation of Industry.

The poll is the third to be released by the CNI and Ibope since a wave of protests began in June in several Brazilian cities against hikes in bus fares, poor public services, corruption and government spending on the soccer World Cup.

Since the protests have died down Brazil's currency has extended year-to-date declines to as much as 15 percent, fueling concern about inflation and a $60 billion currency intervention program aimed at halting the slide.

The central bank has already moved to fight inflation by raising interest rates, a move that could choke off economic growth.

Rousseff's excellent or good rating was 54.2 percent in June, the newspaper said, citing Ibope and CNI.

The poll showed the percentage of people who rated Rousseff's government "bad" or "terrible" fell to 24 percent from 31 percent from July. The percentage who considered Rousseff's performance "average" was unchanged at 37 percent.

Ibope conducted the poll among 2,002 Brazilians between August 15 and August 19. The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Linda Ronstadt said she knew something was wrong when she couldn't sing anymore.

Grammy-winning singer Linda Ronstadt has revealed to AARP that she has Parkinson's disease.

In an interview to be published next week on AARP.org, Ronstadt, 67, says that she realized something was wrong eight years ago when she found herself unable to sing and didn't know why.

"I knew it was mechanical. I knew it had to do with the muscles, but I thought it might have also had something to do with the tick disease that I had," she said. Although the interview excerpt didn't specify the tick-borne illness Ronstadt has, the AARP linked to a page on Lyme disease.

Ronstadt says she also experienced shaky hands, but thought it was because of an operation she had on her shoulder.

"Parkinson's is very hard to diagnose, so when I finally went to a neurologist and he said, 'Oh, you have Parkinson's disease,' I was completely shocked. I wouldn't have suspected that in a million, billion years," she revealed. "No one can sing with Parkinson's disease, no matter how hard you try."

Ronstadt, 67, said that she was diagnosed eight months ago, long after her symptoms first emerged. According to the AARP interview, she now uses a wheelchair when traveling, and has aid poles to assist her when she walks.

The singer has won 11 Grammys, two Academy of Country Music Awards, and even won an Emmy, for the PBS special, "Great Performances: Canciones de Mi Padre." She first came to prominence in the 1960s as lead singer of the Stone Poneys before embarking on a solo career. Her hits include "You're No Good," "When Will I Be Loved," "That'll Be the Day," "Blue Bayou" and "It's So Easy."

Ronstadt also made headlines for dating California Gov. Jerry Brown during his 1980 presidential bid. She was later engaged to "Star Wars" creator George Lucas.

The singer's memoir, "Simple Dreams," will be published Sept. 17, but she told AARP that it does not discuss her illness.

(AP) ? David Price gave up 10 hits, barely made it out of the fifth inning and was admittedly exhausted after walking off the mound for the last time.

Not a great combination for success, yet the reigning AL Cy Young winner still found a way to beat the Baltimore Orioles.

Evan Longoria and Matt Joyce homered, and Price grinded through the Baltimore batting order three times to help the Tampa Bay Rays earn a 4-3 victory Monday night in a duel between AL contenders.

Joyce hit a two-run drive in the fourth to break a tie and push the Rays toward their fifth win in six games. Tampa Bay moved within a half-game of the first-place Red Sox in the AL East, pending Boston's late game in San Francisco.

Price (7-5) was effective when it counted. He struck out six and allowed only two runs, as Baltimore went 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 against the left-hander.

"That's why he's one of the best pitchers in the game. He knows how to get out of jams like that," Orioles center fielder Adam Jones said. "When he needs a strikeout, he knows how to get it."

Price seemed relieved to survive.

"That's the most draining it has been in a while," he said. "This (Baltimore) team is just, they're tough. That's why they're in the position they're in right now. ... We made some pitches when we needed to, had some hard hit balls at some guys. You've got to have that good fortune sometimes."

Price has won four straight decisions since July 12.

"You have to give David credit," manager Joe Maddon said. "David did not have his best night, but nevertheless ... I really, really appreciated his effort."

So did Price's teammates.

"David didn't have his best stuff tonight, and he did a great job battling, really giving us a chance to win," Joyce said.

Fernando Rodney, the fourth Tampa Bay reliever, worked the ninth for his 28th save.

Baltimore starter Chris Tillman (14-4) gave up four runs and five hits in six innings. It was his first loss in seven starts since July 6.

Matt Wieters had three hits and a home run for the Orioles, who fell five games behind Boston. Baltimore outhit Tampa Bay 15-10 but stranded 15 and went 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position.

"We got a good pitcher out of the game in the fifth inning and put a lot of good at-bats up against Price and just couldn't quite break it open," Wieters said.

Tampa Bay went up 4-2 in the fourth when Joyce hit his 16th home run after Yunel Escobar drew a one-out walk. In the Baltimore half, Manny Machado and Chris Davis struck out with runners at the corners.

Price worked out of trouble in the fifth, using his 99th and final pitch to retire Steve Pearce on a sharp grounder with two outs and the bases loaded.

"You've got to have those line drives at guys, you've got to have guys making good plays in the field, and that's what we did tonight," Price said.

Wieters homered off Joel Peralta leading off the seventh, but Baltimore left runners at first and third.

Perhaps taking a cue from the Orioles, Tampa Bay loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth but did not score. In the bottom half, Baltimore wasted a one-out double by Davis.

Longoria put the Rays up 1-0 in the first inning with his 25th home run, the second in two days. He has 11 extra-base hits in his last 12 games, including four homers.

Singles by Escobar, Joyce and No. 9 hitter Kelly Johnson made it 2-0 in the second.

In the bottom half, Danny Valencia got the last of three straight Baltimore hits, an RBI double. Valencia, recalled from Triple-A Norfolk before the game, went 2 for 2 with a walk against Price and is 9 for 12 lifetime against the lefty.

The Orioles got three more hits in the third, including a run-scoring double off the center-field wall by Wieters to knot the score at 2. But Baltimore left two runners in scoring position for the second inning in a row.

NOTES: The game took 3 hours, 56 minutes. ... The Rays activated Desmond Jennings (finger) from the disabled list and optioned RHP Brandon Gomes to Triple-A Durham. Jennings started atop the lineup and went 1 for 4. ... J.J. Hardy, who turned 31 on Monday, started at shortstop for Baltimore after missing two games with back spasms. ... Alex Cobb (7-2) starts for the Rays on Tuesday night against Baltimore RHP Miguel Gonzalez, who's 5-1 at home. ... Price walked only three of 258 batters over his previous nine starts. In this one, he walked two of 27.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? NASA called off all attempts to fix its crippled Kepler space telescope Thursday. But it's not quite ready to call it quits on the remarkable, robotic planet hunter.

Officials said they're looking at what science, if any, might be salvaged by using the broken spacecraft as is.

The $600 million Kepler mission has been in trouble since May, unable to point with precision at faraway stars in its quest for other potential Earths. That's when a critical second wheel failed on the spacecraft. The first of four gyroscope wheels broke in 2012. At least three are needed for precise pointing.

Since it rocketed into space in 2009, Kepler has confirmed 135 exoplanets ? planets outside our solar system. It's also identified more than 3,500 candidate planets.

NASA expects to know by year's end whether the mission is salvageable. Kepler is already on an extended quest; its prime, 3?-year mission ended in November.

The spacecraft is 51 million miles from Earth, orbiting the sun.

If nothing else, new discoveries are expected from data collected over the past four years.

"This is not the last you'll hear from Kepler," promised Paul Hertz, NASA's astrophysics director.

"Kepler has made extraordinary discoveries in finding exoplanets, including several super-Earths in the habitable zone," said John Grunsfeld, a former astronaut who heads NASA's science mission office.

The habitable zone is the distance between a star and planet in which temperatures would permit liquid water and, possibly, life.

"Knowing that Kepler has successfully collected all the data from its prime mission, I am confident that more amazing discoveries are on the horizon," Grunsfeld said in a news release.

Engineers tried without success, over hundreds of hours, to revive the two disabled wheels. The spacecraft remains stable, with thrusters controlling its pointing with as little fuel as possible.

The costs and benefits of the remainder of this mission will be analyzed; results from a pair of studies are expected this fall, with decisions coming afterward.

Kepler's principal investigator, William Borucki of NASA's Ames Research Center in California, said no one knew at the beginning of Kepler's mission whether Earth-size planets were rare and whether Earthlings might be alone.

"Now at the completion of Kepler observations, we know our galaxy is filled to the brim with planets," Borucki said at a news conference. A large portion of these planets are small like Earth, not gas giants like Jupiter, he noted.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of more exoplanets are expected from Kepler findings, Borucki said. He said it would take another three years to analyze the remaining data.

"We literally expect ... the most exciting discoveries are to come in the next few years as we search through all this data," he said.

Plastic solar cells' new design promises bright future

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Harvesting energy directly from sunlight to generate electricity using photovoltaic technologies is a very promising method for producing electricity in an environmentally benign fashion. Polymer solar cells offer unique attractions, but the challenge has been improving their power-conversion efficiency. Now a research team reports the design and synthesis of new polymer semiconductors and reports polymer solar cells with fill factors of 80 percent -- a first. This number is close to that of silicon solar cells.

Google Kills Google+ Local For iOS, App Now Pulled From iTunes App Store

According to a report circulating the web, Google is officially retiring its Google+ Local application for iOS as of August 7th. However, as far as we can tell, that app has already been removed from Apple?s iTunes App Store, and links pointing to the app, when clicked, provide the message that ?the item you?ve requested is not currently available in the U.S. store.?

The report being cited by a number of publications is based on 9to5Mac?s blog post, which refers an email sent in by a tipster. We?ve also obtained a copy of the email, as well, forwarded to us by?Mark Traphagen?who had posted about the app?s closure on Google+. (See full email below).

In the email, Google explains that the Google+ Local app on iOS will be retired on August 7th, as the updated version of the Google Maps app can now offer a number of the functions the Local app once provided, including the ability to search by categories of places, read place information, reviews, pricing, and addresses, plus the ability to rate, review and share the places you?ve been to and discover.

In addition, the email says that after August 7th, users would no longer be able to access the Google+ Local app on their iOS device, but any reviews and ratings created would be available on both their Google+ profile and within the Google Maps app for iOS.

notavailableitunes

However, clicking today on the actual link to the app?from a Google Search result or other webpage, is currently broken. In addition, a search inside the iOS App Store for all Google apps?shows that the app is no longer available there. (Though we did spot what appears to be a beta test of something called Google Coordinate. What?s that all about?)

9to5Mac?s blog post uses an App Store affiliate link to point to the Google+ Local app, and this is now redirecting users who click to the Google Maps iOS application instead.

We?ve reached out to Google to confirm the situation, but it seem pretty apparent, as is. Google+ Local for iOS is no more, even though it?s not yet August 7th. (Update: Google confirms the app is being retired.)

Though much of the functionality has now made it over to Google Maps, the Local app was useful for its singular focus which made it an easy access tool for local listings. Maps is a more robust, feature-rich application, which doesn?t always work best when you?re in need of speed. But the Local app hadn?t been getting much attention in recent weeks, leading to several negative App Store reviews where users complained. One even said the project ?has been put on the back burner? and Google should ?just get rid of it.?

And so it seems Google did.

Under the Larry Page era at Google, the company has been busy streamlining its product lineup and areas of development, with a heavy emphasis on its social platform, Google+. Already, Google+ had absorbed Local on the web, but the Google+ iOS app doesn?t yet contain ?Local? as an option in the sidebar, which is why the email likely pointed users to the Google Maps flagship application instead of both it and the Google+ app.

New global research shows GBP 5.9bn incremental new business for UK sports marketing and consultancy services in wake of London 2012 success

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 15 July 2013

The UK's professional and business services (PBS) sector is a global success story and the growing UK sports marketing and consultancy services segment is set to be worth in excess of GBP 1bn over the next decade in the wake of the phenomenal success of London 2012.

Ardi Kolah's independent report - 'Evolving capabilities of sports marketing and consultancy services in the UK and the opportunities in global markets for these services to 2022' (July 2013) has been referenced by the British Government and has influenced the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) strategy for supporting PBS sector in the UK.

Overview of the Report

1. Sports marketing and consultancy services are an important and fast growing part of the UK?s professional and business services sector.

2. UK sports marketing and consultancy services are forecast to be on course to surpass GBP 1 billion in revenues by 2022.

3. There is large scale and growing global market opportunities and the research identified and evaluated 55 non-recurring major global sports events scheduled to 2022. These offer the prospect of an estimated GBP 5.9 billion worth of expenditure opening new business opportunities.

4. The UK sector is well placed to compete for these opportunities. The phenomenal success of London 2012 provides an unrivalled ?shop window? for our excellence in sports and event-related services.

5. The UK sector forms an eco-system of business services with sports and entertainment content at its heart. It?s highly fragmented and mainly comprises small and medium-sized businesses in three broad areas: sports marketing agencies and advisors, marketing services providers, and infrastructure, technology/media and logistics providers.

6. The UK sector is growing strongly: currently valued at an estimated GBP 500-750m, its forecast to surpass GBP 1bn in revenue by 2022 and is looking increasingly beyond mature European markets to opportunities in fast growing economies in Asia and the Middle East.

7. Business interviewees for this research were uniformly positive about future growth prospects for the UK industry to 2022.

8. The large scale operational and infrastructure budgets associated with forthcoming major global sports events are expected to open incremental business opportunities for the UK sector.

9. Growing economies are using sport as a catalyst to significant inward investment and tourism, e.g. FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

10. Sports sponsorship is seen as a powerful vehicle for global brands to advertise and connect with consumers - especially in growing economies like China, India, Russia and Qatar.

11. The success of London 2012 - the best showcase for the UK sector in a generation.

12. The impact of new technologies ? opportunities and challenges in the ?entertainment economy?, e.g. engagement of users via mobile devices and ?second screen? viewing opportunities.

13. There is increasing recognition of the contribution of women consumers in sports marketing.

14. There are 55 non-recurring major global sports events to 2022 offering an estimated GBP 5.9 billion worth of expenditure in incremental business opportunities. One third of these events will be hosted in Western and Northern Europe.

15. The top five national markets, ranked by the estimated values of events they will host, are: Qatar ? GBP 1.7bn, e.g. FIFA World Cup 2022; Russia ? GBP 1.4bn, e.g. Winter Olympics & Paralympics 2014; FIFA World Cup 2018; Brazil ? GBP 1.3bn, e.g. FIFA World Cup 2014; Olympics & Paralympics 2016; South Korea ? GBP 0.5bn, e.g. Asian Games 2014, Winter Olympics & Paralympics 2018; France- GBP 0.3bn, e.g. UEFA European Football Championship 2016.

16. Research contributors to the Report identified the following issues which impact on the growth of UK sports marketing and consultancy businesses: the challenges of establishing local partnerships when targeting new overseas markets; getting to grips with unfamiliar legal frameworks in overseas markets, e.g. contract law, intellectual property; the challenge for smaller businesses to find the resources for exploratory visits to potential clients overseas; and growing international competition for the supply of services to major events, included some based on subsidy.

17. The UK sector is encouraged to make the most of the ?London 2012 effect? as a catalyst for securing new business overseas.

18. It is important that the British Government ensures that the UK continues to host large sports events to showcase our experience and expertise to international markets.

19. The UK sector must continue to build relationships with potential overseas clients to unlock new business at forthcoming global sports events.

20. The UK sector must secure and sustain local partnerships in targeted overseas markets and deliver incremental services value by partnering with clients on their terms, e.g. to transfer knowledge/skills to them.

21. The UK sector needs to achieve a stronger collective marketing approach in order to target new business in overseas markets.

22. The UK sector needs to work alongside the Government that has a cohesive enabling/facilitation function that includes co-ordinating trade promotions, advice and mission activities.

23. A new standard industry code (SIC) should be considered for the UK sports marketing and consultancy services segment given its importance to the PBS.

'Despicable Me 2,' 'Grown Ups' beat 'Pacific Rim'

Movies

Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" failed to do monster business at the North American box office as it was beat by "Despicable Me 2" and Adam Sandler's ensemble comedy "Grown Ups 2" in a major disappointment for Thomas Tull's Legendary Pictures.

Image: "Pacific Rim"

Warner Bros. Pictures

"Pacific Rim."

"Pacifc Rim" grossed $38.3 million, a problematic number considering the movie's production budget of at least $190 million. Legendary footed most of the bill, with distribution and marketing partner Warner Bros. putting up a minority stake. Opening in 38 markets overseas, the 3D tentpole took in $53 million for a worldwide total of $91 million. While strong in Asia, Russia and Mexico, "Pacific Rim"was soft elsewhere.

Universal's box office hit "Despicable 2"stayed at No. 1 in its second weekend, grossing $44.8 million for a domestic total of $229.2 million. The 3D animated tentpole also came in No. 1 internationally, grossing $55.7 million from 50 markets for a worldwide total of $472.4 million. It has earned $243.2 million at the foreign box office and will eclipse the entire run of "Despicable Me" this week ($293 million).

"Despicable Me 2."

ANALYSIS: What 'Pacific Rim's' fate means for Legendary and Warner Bros.

Sony's "Grown Ups 2" opened to a stellar $42.5 million domestically in a needed win for Sandler, who has had a string of box office disappointments.

Despite being ravaged by critics, "Grown Ups 2" received a B- CinemaScore, same as the 2010 original. The sequel, costing a relatively modest $80 million to produce, reteams Sandler with Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Salma Hayek, Maya Rudolph and Maria Bello.

Fox's Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy comedy "The Heat"placed No. 4 in its third outing, jumping the $100 million mark and ending the weekend with a North American cume of $112.4 million.

Coming in No. 5 was Gore Verbinski's troubled "The Lone Ranger," which tumbled a steep 61 percent to $11.1 million in its second weekend for a tepid domestic cume of $77.1 million. Overseas, the big-budget tentpole took in a meek $12.7 million from 33 territories for an international total of $48 million and worldwide cume of $119.1 million. "Lone Ranger" has a number of major markets in which yet to open.

Marking del Toro's first big-budget tentpole, "Pacific Rim" pits giant robots against alien monsters and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day.

Defying soft prerelease tracking, "Pacific Rim" got off to a better-than-expected start Thursday night and Friday, but once fanboy traffic started tapering off late Friday, the movie took a dip. Mirroring strong reviews, "Pacific Rim" received an A- CinemaScore.

IMAX theaters -- the favored venue for fanboys -- ponied up a robust $7.3 million. In another sign that fanboys turned out in force, more than 50 percent of the overall gross came from 3D screens, a record for the summer.

Younger moviegoers made up the biggest percentage of the audience for"Pacific Rim," with 47 percent of those buying tickets under the age of 25 and 67 percent under the age of 35.

Overseas, "Pacific Rim" launched to strong numbers in Asia, Russia and Mexico -- del Toro's home country -- though it fared dismally in Australia on Thursday, coming in No. 4 behind the the opening day of "The Heat," "Despicable Me 2" and "Monsters University" (the two animated films are benefiting from school holidays). It also was soft in the U.K.

Final weekend numbers have yet to be released, but "Pacific Rim" is expected to end the weekend with worldwide grosses just north of $90 million.

VIDEO: 'Pacific Rim's' Guillermo del Toro on box-office pressure, planning a sequel

So far internationally, the tentpole is outpacing a slew of films that went on to gross between $300 million and $400 million overseas, including"Rise of the Planet of the Apes," "Clash of the Titans" and "Prometheus." It's also pacing on par with "World War Z," which has earned more than $200 million to date at the foreign box office.

Making headlines at the specialty box office in North America was The Weinstein Co.'s critically acclaimed "Fruitvale Station," about the the shooting of a young African-American man by BART police in Oakland. The film -- opening just as George Zimmermanwas acquitted of shooting Trayvon Martin-- grossed $377,285 from seven theaters for a location average of $53,898, the third best of the year so far.

"Fruitvale" starMichael B. Jordan and first-time feature Ryan Coogler have been vocal in comparing the two shootings, and the issues they raise.

Fox Searchlight's "The Way, Way Back" performed nicely as it expanded into a total of 79 theaters, grossing $1.1 million for a location average of $14,051 and cume of $1.8 million.

State officials write letter to President urging FEMA to return

Story Created: Jul 12, 2013 at 5:11 PM EDT

Story Updated: Jul 12, 2013 at 5:27 PM EDT

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Four upstate senators have banded together to try and help the constituents in their districts affected by the recent flooding get some financial relief.

Senators James Seward (51st Senate District), Joe Griffo (47th Senate District) , David Valesky (53rd Senate District) and Hugh Farley (49th Senate District) together sent a letter to President Obama asking for an additional assessment by FEMA on the flood damage here in Upstate New York.

Seward and Griffo held a press conference Friday afternoon at the Village of Herkimer firehouse to make that announcement and more.

Seward says it is imperative that the government come to the aid of those here in our area, "to ensure that the long term costs of these devastating floods do not overwhelm our local governments, our homeowners and business people."

An example that the damage was not limited to home and business owners could be seen right inside the Herkimer Fire House where the press conference took place on Friday.

One of Herkimer's fire trucks was badly damaged on the first night of the flooding back on June 27.

Herkimer Fire Chief John Spanfelner says the estimate on the repair cost is not in yet, but describes what caused the extensive damage.

"Where the garage was washed across the road on German Street, the slab of cement from the floor was laying on German Street," Chief Spanfelner said. "The water washed over it and the firefighters didn't know it was there, and it did a lot of undercarriage damage that we're just finding more and more of."

Chief Spanfelner is hoping that FEMA aid will help cover what the village's insurance doesn't.

The four senators are asking the president to have FEMA come back for a second time and do a more thorough assessment before making a final decision.

Senator Griffo says he hopes a second assessment would make the difference when it comes to exceeding the threshold for FEMA aid to kick in.

"We look at how the IRS is wasting money on conferences, we look at what we're doing in foreign aid," Senator Griffo said. "We can help our communities here. Even if we don't meet the threshold, they have a duty and obligation to step forward and help us."

Herkimer County Legislative Chairman Vincent Bono was also at Friday's press conference.

He says FEMA has been called in a second time in the past, and he is hoping that is the case this time.

"Back in 2011, after Hurricane Lee, Herkimer County experienced some damage," Chairman Bono said. "During the initial assessment that was brought forth, we didn't make the cut. We petitioned the federal government to come back, and with a subsequent survey, we did meet that threshold."

The senators also have written a letter to Governor Cuomo to hold a 'Flood Summit' with the appropriate commissioners, state representatives, first responders and local elected officials to address current flooding problems and to prevent future flooding.

Griffo says it's time for such a gathering.

"We've had summits on a number of things, related to business and economics, and we also have to look at this from a natural type of occurrence, that is unfortunately happening too often," Griffo said.

Finally the senators have come up with a package of legislation they would like to see passed to help current and future flood victims.

Seward says the key point of the legislation is to set up a state emergency relief fund to help disaster victims in New York State when FEMA doesn't kick in.

The legislation would also give homeowners and businesses a refundable state income tax credit against property taxes paid where homes and businesses have suffered damage that reduces their value.

Both Seward and Griffo say they are hoping that if there is a special session of the legislature called in the coming months, their proposals could be taken up later this year.
